Born in Digby on December 7, 1928, the only child on Raymond and Annie (Mutch) Lent, Ruth Marie Durrant died on December 22, 2019. She graduated from Digby High School, Provincial Normal College, class of 1947 and Dalhousie University (B.A.) in 1975. A resident of Dartmouth since 1949, Ruth was proud of her three children, Mary Ruth (Mitchell Brooks), David (Kathy Thalmann) and Jean, and of her four grandchildren, Emma Brooks (Tom Mednick), Nathan Brooks, and Ashley and Brittany Durrant. Ruth taught junior high school for over 31 years, 21 of those years at Caledonia Junior High School, Dartmouth. She was the first Junior High Teacher-Librarian in the Dartmouth school system. An active member of the Dartmouth local of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union, she was also a member of the Nova Scotia Teachers Credit Union Board of Directors, serving as president in 1974-75. Ruth was a dedicated member of the Dartmouth local of the Retired Teachers Association, serving one two-year term as president and two terms as treasurer. A long-time parishioner of Christ Church Dartmouth, Ruth was the first woman Warden in its long history, and a member of its Council for eight years. She was a member for over 50 years of the Ethel Hiltz branch and unit of the Anglican Church Women of Canada and president of the general ACW for four years. Her cheerful voice greeted you as Tuesday office volunteer for over 23 years at the Parish office. Ruth was the welcoming ticket taker for Dartmouth Community Concert for several years and served on its board as well. There will be no visitation at Ruth’s request. The body has been cremated. A celebration of life will be held in the summer of 2020. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Corporation of Christ Church or a charity of your choice.
