It is with sadness that we share the news that Shirley A. Pettigrew passed away April 6th, at Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Bangs Falls, Queens County, NS. Shirley was the daughter of the late Porter and Hattie (Lloyd) Joudrey. She is survived by her loving and cherished husband, Aubrey. Son – Glenn (Laura), Alpharetta, GA. Daughter – Lisa, Harmony Ridge, NS. Son – Roy (Michelle) Nurse, Hope, BC. Brother – Ken Joudrey, Bridgewater, NS. Predeceased by sister Phyllis (Jack) Lawrence and stepmother Mabele. Grandchildren – Thomas, Julia, and Chelsea.
Shirley grew up in Greenfield. She spent many years working in Liverpool and St. John. She moved to Halifax in 1960 and worked for Maritime Tel & Tel, where she met her husband, Aubrey. She retired in 1993. Shirley and Aubrey enjoyed many years of travelling together, throughout Canada, United States (including Hawaii), and Europe.
An active member of Stevens Road United Baptist Church, Shirley served on various committees. She bowled on/off throughout her life and later took up golf in her retirement. Shirley’s family and friends have many fond memories of camping in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter. An animal lover, her little dog of 15 years also helped to keep her moving. Shirley was a social butterfly and always had fun getting together with friends, was past member of the Red Hat Society, as well as the Christian Womens’ group. And, Shirley always loved her fashion – she was the hippest grandmother around, motoring down the road in her Mini Cooper.
Shirley will be tremendously missed by family and friends.
Visitation to celebrate Shirley will be held on Monday, April 11th, at Mattatal Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth, NS B2Y 1J5. Times are 2-4 PM and 6-8PM.
Committal will be a private family service in Greenfield, NS, in June.
Family flowers only please. Donations in Shirley’s memory can be made to Stevens Road United Baptist Church, Dartmouth General Hospital, or a charity of choice.
