SARTY, Shirley June (Walker) – 73 of Dartmouth passed away March 30, 2011 following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in New Russell, Nova Scotia, Shirley was the youngest of nine children of the late Harvey and Viola (Lantz) Walker. Shirley retired in 2002 after spending 30 years with Modern Building Cleaning, the majority of those years as office manager. For many years she was involved in the ladies auxiliary of the Canadian Legion, Scotia Branch.
Shirley was known for her unmistakable laugh, infectious smile and easy going nature. She enjoyed spending time with her many friends, camping and puttering in her garden. The lights of her life were her grandchildren and she adhered to the theory that it was the grandmother’s job to spoil them. Shirley is survived by her son Paul Sarty (Christi Cahill), Bedford; and daughter Alison MacDonald (Michael), Dartmouth; her cherished grandchildren Emily, Abbey, Gavin and Iain; Brother Dean (Ceretha) of Windsor and sister Helen Publicover of Burlington, Ontario and many nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by Brothers Harry, Hazen, Gordon; and sisters Eunice Nauss, Alice Beck and Mildred Wambolt.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a visitation Friday, April 1 from 6pm-8pm at A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth. A memorial service will take place at 11am Saturday, April 2 at the New Ross United Baptist Church with Pastor David Hines officiating. Burial at a later date. On-line condolences can be made at www.mattatallfuneralhome.com. The family would like to thank the VON; the palliative care professionals from Capital District Health Authority and to her physician, Dr. Peter MacAulay who made sure Shirley received the best care possible. Special appreciation also to Mom’s good friend Don Briand who helped care for her during her illness.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Victoria Order of Nurses (www.von.ca/en/donate) or the Palliative Care Unit of Capital District Health Authority.
