Shirley Irene Whelpley

Whelpley, Shirley Irene-81, of Dartmouth passed away peacefully on January 31, 2014 at the Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in LaHave, Lunenburg County she was the daughter of the late Manford and Alva (Corkum) Corkum Shirley retired from the Department of Education of Nova Scotia in 1994 after 22 years of service. She was a member of Christ Church for over 60 years. Surviving are daughters, Sharon, at home, Shirley Anne Wilson (James), Lawrencetown; granddaughters, Lisa Smith (Michael), Cole Harbour, Sarah Mitchell (John), Eastern Passage; great grandchildren, Kali, J.D., Logan, Cohen, and Chloe; sisters, Leona Brown, New Market, ON, Yvonne Collings, Bradford, ON; brothers, Randall, Dartmouth, Bernie (Marilyn), Irquois, ON, Wayne (Cathy), Ontario; as well as several nieces and nephews. Special friends, Clarence Goodwin and his daughter Susan, Halifax, Clarence has been like a grandfather (Gramps) to Lisa and Sarah. Besides her parents she is predeceased by her husband, John “Jack”; brother, Leon. Shirley loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren, whether it was a day trip here or there or even just a lunch date as long as she was with her family she was happy and content. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the transitional care unit at the Dartmouth General. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth, where visitation will be held on Tuesday February 4, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8pm. Funeral service will be at 11am Wednesday February 5, 2014 in Christ Church, Ochterloney Street, Rev. Jane Clattenburg officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Interment to take place in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. Family flowers only, in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
