Thomas Richard Swales

The family of Tommy sadly announce his passing on January 1, 2022. Tommy was born in North Dartmouth in 1938, a son of the late Reginald and Kathleen (Richards) Swales. In his early years he was employed with Imperial Oil, Marine Division (1955 – 1961). He was a firefighter with the Dartmouth Fire Dept. for 30 years, retiring in 1994 as Divisional Chief of Administration. He enjoyed many summers at the cottage on Lake Charlotte and spent countless hours in rinks playing hockey, coaching and 15 years as a referee. Tommy managed the New Olde Colony Social Club where he made many long-lasting friendships and enjoyed several annual Jamborees and other socials that he truly loved. He also enjoyed many winter trips to Florida. Tommy was predeceased by his wife and best friend of 56 years, MaryRose, sisters Paula and Wendy (Fred) and is survived by his daughter Brenda Lee (Jay) and son Darren (Loretta); grandchildren Ryan, Corey (Chantal), Jamie and Julia; great grandchildren Willow, Maverick, Nixon, Nash, Knox and Huxley; brother Graham (Marion) and sister Laura Lee (John), special only surviving Aunt Maureen and his “special brother” Joe. Cremation has taken place. A private family graveside service will be held at Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society. A special thank you to the Staff of Glasgow Hall and his “buddy” Andrea Casey who always had a special place in Tommy’s heart.

Fireman’s prayer

"When I am called to duty, God whenever flames may rage,

Give me the strength to save some life whatever be its age.

Help me to embrace a little child before it's too late,

Or some older person from the horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout,

And quickly and efficiently to put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling and give the best in me,

To guard my neighbor and protect his property.

And if according to Your Will I have to lose my life,

Please bless with Your Protecting Hand my children and my wife."
