On July 21, 1953, my mother, Marilyn, was birthing her first child (me) in Mercy Hospital in Davenport. In the same place, at the same time, her sister, and my aunt, Betty, was birthing her youngest. This has generated a unique bond with my cousin, David, and with my Aunt Betty. 

My sister, Katie, has written eloquently about wonderful childhood memories. I echo all of them! But is was really as an adult in the last 30 years or so that I have come to know Aunt Betty best. Through visits and phone calls and Happy Joe's pizza at Betty's place, along with Aunt Doris and Aunt Lois, I have grown to more deeply love that half of me that is Volrath. Three character traits of Aunt Betty especially stand out for me.

COURAGE. These past three years have been difficult for Aunt Betty with her declining health. As my mom did nearly 30 years before, Aunt Betty faced this with dignity and grace. Whenever I called her she was always upbeat and appreciative of time spent with family. I shall call myself fortunate, if I have this same courage when necessary for myself. 

HUMOR. Wow! What a wonderful sense of humor Aunt Betty had. From stories about prodding Aunt Doris to "tuck her in like Bob does" while on a trip, to laughter over Uncle Mike's howling over an alcohol rub on his sunburned head, she could laugh to the point of tears with the best of them.

LOVE. At the end of the day, family was the most important thing. All our conversations included updates of what was happening with her kids, their spouses, and the generations of offspring they generated. Aunt Betty was the essence of being Volrath in this regard!

Now Aunt Doris is the matriarch of those wonderful Volrath siblings that made the very lives of so many of us possible. I know that our Aunt Betty now experiences a joy with our Lord beyond any we can image. For those of us left behind, though, it is hard. I hope all that knew and loved her can find some solace in the wonderful instances of her life!

Dear Mangels Family, I was shocked to learn of Betty's passing. She has been part of our Heritage Court Family from the beginning. She and Ralph opened the doors to the place. They took care of each other for years. When my mom, Marilyn Moore and husband, Dennis, moved in, Betty invited mom to the "card club". I will remember her prayers before eating lunch when visiting. I can see Betty and my mom playing cards in heaven.  Our sincere sympathy to all of her loving family

To all my Mangels cousins..  I was so sorry to hear about Aunt Betty.   She was certainly LOVED by all of the Freund children.  I have so many great memories that I will always cherish.  Her loving heart was so apparent to us during my Mom's illness, death and beyond. She was a source of strength during such a difficult time.   I also have great memories of our childhood family events...which, let's face it, started on Memorial Day and went through to Christmas.  Picnics...card parties...visits from Santa...they are wonderful memories. (AND Marie Keller cupcakes).   Then there are they many days of playing cards....with her.  I can tell you our grown sons still request to play Nickels whenever we are all together...and someone always uses Aunt Betty's line..."Hey, my fingers never left my hand", when retrieving a card they did not mean to throw away.   Of course, that line is always followed by...Hey, that is Aunt Betty's rule...so there!    Hugs to you all....and CHEERS to a life well lived to Aunt Betty!
