Carol was born on November 26, 1934, in Davenport, Iowa, one of four children. She married Donald George on October 9, 1954, in a double wedding ceremony with her brother Kenneth and his fiancée, Marilyn Regennitter. Shortly thereafter, Carol and Don—who was serving in the military—moved to Hawaii, where their son Jonathan was born. After returning to Iowa, they welcomed their daughter, Laura.
Carol began her career as a secretary in Davenport, with a brief period working in Wisconsin. She later trained in medical transcription and spent many years at Franciscan Hospital in Rock Island before transitioning to work from home during the final years of her career. In her 50s, Carol enrolled at Scott Community College and fulfilled a lifetime dream of a college degree, graduating in 1992. She retired at age 77.
Carol was an intelligent, caring, and unpretentious woman who found joy in many things: her family; sewing; her work; her church, where she played in a handbell choir; Jazzercise; crossword puzzles; feeding birds; gardening; turning homegrown grapes into jelly—and, always, coffee.
Those left to honor her memory include her children and their spouses, Jonathan (Elizabeth) George and Laura (Jeffrey) Gitlin; grandchildren Karlie (Trevor) Gannon, Leah (Kyle) Ross, Jacob (Kayce Riphagen) George, Kelsey Gitlin, and Taylor Gitlin; great-grandchildren Adrian Miracle, Ariel Gannon, and Wells Ross; and her sister, Gwendolyn (John) Knollman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald George; her parents, Beulah (Dooley) and Forest Fowler; and her siblings, Kenneth Fowler and Lorraine Darland.
