Charles F. Holden

Charles F. Holden, 99, a recent resident of Grand Haven in Eldridge, passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at Clarissa Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, following a brief stay. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2015, from 4-8 p.m. at the Runge Mortuary. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, April 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Davenport, with an additional visitation at the church one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Online condolences may be expressed by visiting www.rungemortuary.com.

Charles was born on June 13, 1915, in Tama, Iowa, a son of Glenn and Laura (Warner) Holden. On September 29, 1946, he was united in marriage to Mildred Schaefer in Davenport. He was an entrepreneur who, with his brothers, owned Propane Gas and The Edgetowner restaurant in Mt. Joy, Iowa. Charles was a real estate agent for Norm Fredricks until his retirement at the age of 70. He was a member of both the Bettendorf and Davenport School Boards for a total of 25 years.

Chuck, along with his three brothers, was a proud veteran of WWII. During the war, Chuck served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific theater. He loved his wife and family. He and Millie took an active part in their children’s lives and enjoyed watching their numerous grandchildren’s activities.

Those left to honor his memory include his children, Robert (Jana) Holden, Freeport, IL, Lee (Jackie) Holden, Eldridge, IA, Suzanne (George) Johnson, Liberty, MO, Dan (Jollie) Holden, also of Eldridge, Paul Holden and fiancée, Sandy Hansen, Bettendorf, and Nancy (Chuck) Hathaway, Naperville, IL; his brothers, Harvey Holden and Birchard Holden; sisters, Helen Larson, Virginia Dunville and Lila Shotwell; sister-in-law, Adeline Dodds, Pleasant Valley, IA; 19 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, a brother, Edgar Holden, and a daughter-in-law, Leanne Holden.
