Dolores Jeanine Bruckmann was born in 1935 in Davenport, Iowa to Harold and Bernile Bruckmann. She married Sam Syverud on June 19, 1954 in Davenport. Lori left college after marriage, returning in the mid-70’s, first finishing her undergraduate degree (graduating with their eldest in 1977), and immediately thereafter, earning an M.A. in education. While Lori had taught pre-school classes for many years prior, following earning her degrees, she sought the increased challenge of teaching at a special needs elementary school in Davenport. Lori also became an entrepreneur following her career in education, becoming licensed in both realty and securities, then capping her career providing exclusive women’s apparel.
Beginning in the early years of raising a family, Lori was a constant and reliable volunteer for a spectrum of community services which fundamentally aimed at improving the lives of the Quad City community members. She was active in the Visiting Nurses Association, PEO, TriDelt sorority, Quad City Arts (with a particular fondness for the annual Festival of Trees), the Tri-City Symphony, and many others.
Her entire life with Sam she savored traveling. While honeymooning on Canada lakes proved alluring enough to encourage the sharing of many camping experiences with their children, Lori’s periodic winter getaways to Florida to visit a close friend expanded into world travel: multiple visits to Europe, at least once to the Soviet Union, and culminating in a three-generational family tour of Sam’s ancestral homeland of Norway.
Following their respective retirements, Lori and Sam stayed busy with family and friends, yard work, and basking in visits from their growing family of grandchildren, even adding a kids’ dorm “bonus room” to their already welcoming home.
Survivors include Lori’s sister, Roberta Mosher, Weed, CA; son John Syverud (Mary McKeown) of St. Paul, MN; daughters Tina (Dan) Allison of Mendota Heights, MN, and Marta (Jim) Burnham of Pleasant Valley, IA; grandchildren Sam Allison (Yi Wang), Andy Burnham, Kristen Syverud (Zac Pearson), Matt Burnham, Scott Allison, Emily Syverud (Jared Sauber), Madeline Burnham, John Allison, Michael Syverud, and great-grandaughter, Rory Burnham; brother-in-law, John Syverud of Pleasant Valley, IA, along with multiple nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, brother Laurie, husband Sam, sister-in-law Betty Syverud, and nephew John Syverud.
