

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Donald D. Birkholz, 87, of Davenport will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 10, 2017 at the Cunnick-Collins Mortuary Chapel in Davenport. The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. until service time at the mortuary. A private burial will be held at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City, IA. Mr. Birkholz died on Wednesday, April 5th, 2017 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf. Donald Dale Birkholz was born on July 8, 1929 in Charles City, IA, the son of Leo and Thelma (Gunn) Birkholz. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the United States Army where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and served from 1946 until 1952. Upon fulfilling his military obligations he went on to attain his Associate of Arts degree. He worked in the heating and cooling industry before retiring from Adel Wholesalers as their credit manager in 1992. In April of 1957 he married Dolores Kollman in Charles City, IA. She preceded him in death in March of 2009. Mr. Birkholz was a member of the Hamilton Masonic Lodge #664 in Bettendorf. He loved to fish, hunt, and shoot trap in his spare time. Surviving members of the family include – 2 Daughters: Kay (Chris) Bernat of Overland Park, KS and Toni (Steve) Read of San Diego, CA; a Son: Mike (Jennifier) Birkholz of Olathe, KS; a Sister: Ann (Larry) Kaye of Alamo, CA; and 4 Grandchildren: Nicholas, Peter, Dylon, and Katlyn. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dolores, a son Eric, a sister June, and a brother William. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House. The family would like to thank all of his wonderful nurses at Genesis East as well as the nurses and staff at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House.
