

Donald Glen Foreman, 88, of Davenport, passed away Monday, October 27, 2014. Celebration of life services will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 10:00 am at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 14th & Brady Street in Davenport. Visitation will be Friday, October 31, 2014 from 3:30 pm until 6:30 pm at The Runge Mortuary. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. Memorials may be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church.
Mr. Foreman was born in 1925 and raised on a farm near Le Mars, Iowa; the son of George and Delia Foreman. He married Greta Vander Maten on June 17, 1947. After high school graduation he was drafted into the 99th Army Infantry Division in WWII and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, Battle of Remagen, Battle of Rhineland and the Battle of Ruhr Valley. After he returned home from the service he attended Northwestern College in Orange City, IA for two years and completed work at Westmar College in Le Mars, IA where he earned his B.A. degree in the spring of 1950. For the next six years Don and his wife taught at Danbury (Western Iowa). There he taught Industrial Arts, coached baseball and basketball and served as the high school principal his last three years. During this six year period the Foremans attended summer school at the Colorado State College of Education, Greeley, CO, where Don earned his Master’s degree in 1953.
In 1956 the Foremans moved to Davenport, IA. Their three children were born in Davenport in the 1960’s. Don served as Supervisor of Industrial Arts and Vocational Education for the Jr. and Sr. Highs in the Davenport Schools from 1956 until 1966. During this same period of time he was involved in the ground work for the future Scott Community College along with two other administrators. In the fall of 1966 he became the first President of Scott Community College and served in that capacity until 1980.
Don’s memberships included the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Combat Infantry Association, Davenport Rotary Club, N.E.A., I.S.E.A., Iowa Vocational Technical Assoc., Epsilon Pi Tau and the Davenport Area Retired Teacher’s Association. He held many offices at St. John’s United Methodist Church, where he sang with the choir and was a member of the 49ers church school class.
Survivors include daughters: Karla (Bill) Sandry, Bettendorf, IA and Pam (John) Simonovich, Bloomington, IL; son, Brad Foreman, Davenport; nine grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and a sister, Dorothy Bloomendaal. In addition to his parents and his wife, Donald was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Klienwolterink and a brother, Lester Foreman.
