

A celebration of life for Douglas D. Carter, 47, of Blue Grass, IA, will be held at The Freight House, 1115 Auburn Ave., Chariton, IA, on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. Inurnment will be at a later date. Mr. Carter passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at his home. Cunnick-Collins Mortuary and Cremation Service assisted the family with arrangements. Douglas DeWayne Carter was born in Muscatine, IA on December 28, 1963, the son of Lloyd and Sharon (Moore) Carter. Doug grew up in his early years in the Fairport/Montpelier area until the age of 13 when his parents purchased a bowling alley and moved the family to Chariton, IA. In 1993 while working on a road paving crew, Doug along with two of his friends, Keith Jones and Carroll Buckalew, pulled two men from a burning vehicle. They were later awarded Iowa's prestigious Life Saving with Valor Award. In 1994 Doug had a serious automobile accident, which after a year of hospitalization and rehab returned home to Chariton with his parents. In 2000 after his parents retired, Doug and his parents moved together with his sister and her family to Blue Grass, IA. The most important past time for Doug was spending time with family and friends, playing cards, playing pool, fishing, and bowling. He was also an avid Harley Davidson fan. He is survived by his Father: Lloyd Carter of Blue Grass, IA; a Brother: Richard “Rick” (Marilyn) Carter of Chariton, IA; a Sister: Debora (Johnny) Davis of Blue Grass; 4 Nieces and Nephews: Amber (Adam) Davis-Timmerman of Davenport, IA, Kiah Carter of Woodburn, IA, Carly Carter of Chariton, IA, Austin Davis of Blue Grass, IA; and two Great-Nephews: Hunter Timmerman of Davenport, IA; Brandon Timmerman of Clarence, IA. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sharon, on August 25, 2011. Memorials may be directed to the family.
