A celebration of Doug’s life will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at the Runge Mortuary & Crematory in Davenport, Iowa. Social time will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., with eulogies beginning at 6:30 p.m. Condolences may be shared at www.rungemortuary.com.
Doug was a loving, kind, and patient son, brother, nephew, and cousin. He lovingly cared for his mother, Rita, through her battle with pancreatic cancer, then supported his father, Jay, after her passing, and later cared for his brother, James, during his final days. Remarkably, Doug arranged for the services of all three of his immediate family members within ten years.
He faced life’s challenges with a wry sense of humor and a one-of-a-kind laugh that will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him
.
Doug was proud of his job as an essential worker at Schnucks Grocery Store during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also enjoyed working alongside James at Café Express and through James’s catering business.
A passionate sports fan, Doug was also an active sports blogger who especially loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs. He was an avid fantasy baseball player and was thrilled to win his league’s championship in 2023.
Doug had a deep love for politics and history, mystery novels (especially those by Alex Kava), movies, and travel. He cherished a series of camping trips with his mother and brother in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and a once-in-a-lifetime trip to France with his brother. There, he was deeply moved by visiting Normandy Beach and thrilled to dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant. He hoped to return to Europe in 2025 to attend an Iron Maiden concert.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Rita and Jay Preszler, and his brother, James. He is survived by four aunts in South Dakota, one in Texas, numerous cousins, and many kind friends and neighbors.
Like his paternal grandfather, Ervin Preszler, Doug rarely met a stranger. He had a gift for conversation and a genuine curiosity about the paths others walked.
Doug will be remembered for his warmth, compassion, and generosity.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (pancan.org) in remembrance of Doug’s mother, Rita Preszler, and in honor of Doug’s advocacy for the organization following her death.
