

Douglas Randle Walker, 66, of Blue Grass passed away Monday, June 25, 2012 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf. Celebration of Life Service will be held Monday, July 2, 2012 11:30AM at Adventure Christian Community Church with greeting of family and friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Inurnment will follow at the National Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the family. On line condolence may be made at www.rungemortuary.com .
Doug was born January 17, 1946 in Starkville, Mississippi the son of Earsley James and Ola Erlene (Thompson) Walker. He was united in marriage to his loving wife of 30 years Susan DeWitte, on August 8, 1981 in Davenport, Iowa.
He proudly served in the United States Army from 1965-1967 – MAC V.
He retired from the Davenport Fire Department in 1996. Throughout his career he worked for the Scott County Sherriff’s Department as a Deputy and Helicopter pilot, Kennedy Space Center – SWAT Team, Wonder Bread and Dohrn Transfer, and The Rock Island Arsenal – pre pack.
He was a long time member of Adventure Christian Community Church. His memberships extended to Vietnam Veteran Post #776, Disabled American Veteran of American and IA/IL Ostomy Association. Doug also enjoyed volunteering for the American Cancer Society.
Doug enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and woodworking.
Of his many accomplishments he was most proud of building his own home and being the inventor of “The Holder”.
Those surviving are his wife, Susan, Blue Grass; daughter, Shelli Flores, St. Cloud, FL; sons, James Carr, Blue Grass, Jason (Heidi) Walker, Quincy, MA, Jon Paul Walker, Davenport, Curtis Carr, West Des Moines, and Joel (Jennifer) Walker, Davenport; sisters, Irma Jewel (Gerald) Gentry, Artesia, MS, Kay (Charles) Dooley, Davenport; brothers, Leon (Carole) Walker, Davenport, Bob (Kerry) Walker, Lakeway, TX, Don (Sondra) Walker, Cedar Park, TX, sister-in-law, Julie (Jack) Spinello, Coal Valley, IL; brother-in-law, Dan (Elayne) DeWitte, Melbourne, FL; many nieces and nephews; grandchildren, Ed Flores, Christopher Flores, Emily Flores, all of St. Cloud, FL, James Douglas Carr, Blue Grass, Courtney and Reagan Walker, Davenport, Garrett Walker, Quincy, MA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Jim “Big Jim” Walker and Harry T. “Cow Boy” Walker; mother and father-in-law, Adolph and Bernardine DeWitte.
The family would like to personally thank the VA Clinic, Bettendorf, VA Hospital, Iowa City, Genesis Hospice Care, Bettendorf, and the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, for their exceptional care they provided to Douglas.
