Mike was born in Hastings, Nebraska to parents Fritz and Carol (Sorensen) Thavenet. His father instilled a love for Nebraska sports in Mike, a love that he passed to his sons, Jason and Adam. There were many laughs (and headaches) shared watching Nebraska football games over the years, especially when Nebraska played Iowa. His daughter, Kylie, was his biggest, self-lesa supporter, except during those games when she would make sure he knew Iowa had scored!
He married his beautiful wife, Teri (Brower) on May 2, 1981. They spent the following years navigating life as young parents. While Teri stayed home to raise the kids, Mike dedicated his life to ensuring their needs were met. They found strength through the hard times, and Mike’s children can often be found reflecting on things their father did to make them the people they are today.
Known for his unwavering kindness and generous spirit, he lived a life centered on helping others and making a difference. He was an active member of Rotary and enjoyed participating in the beloved community event, Bix7, every year. Running was Mike’s outlet, and he valued the friendships made through the running community. Mike helped form the youth wrestling program within the North Scott area, leaving a lasting impact on countless kids.
He was the proud owner of Premier Pest Management Services, working alongside his son Adam for 24 years. He was known for taking care of “issues” for friends in exchange for little more than a case of Busch Light and good conversation.
Mike was a man on the move. He loved taking road trips across the country, floating in a canoe down the Wapsi or watching his daughter’s dance recitals. He was always challenging his sons to different competitions to see who was faster. As an avid runner, he kept the boys humble and enjoyed crossing the finish line first.
Later in life, he found joy riding his motorcycle through deserts and along the water with good friends. He treasured peaceful getaways to Gulf Shores with Teri.
Mike was immeasurably grateful for the community support received over the last few years; he felt the love everywhere he went. The North Scott Community and beyond became “Thavenet Strong”.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Teri and their three children: Jason (Jenny) Thavenet, Adam (Kelly) Thavenet and Kylie (Alex) Hugi. He was an incredible papa to nine grandchildren: Cole, Ava, Maddy, Lincoln, Willow, Taytum, Hudson, Graham and Owen, and has two sisters: Diana (Rusty) Jones and Donna Thavenet-Trentman. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Fritz and Carol Thavenet.
A service was held at the Runge Mortuary and Crematory Davenport, Iowa on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 12pm, with visitation two hours prior to service time.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made at DuTrac Community Credit Union in Mike’s name to benefit the North Scott Youth Wrestling Club. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.rungemortuary.com (http://www.rungemortuary.com/).
