Elmer was born February 24, 1923, in Davenport, IA, the son of Elmer and Lydia (Kistenmacher) Haase. After completing the 8 th grade at Scott County Rural School #6, he worked at the family farm on Locust Street. From May 1943 to April 1946, he honorably served in the Army during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines and Japan.
After the war, he farmed and married Mary Patricia Scott of West Liberty, IA, on November 27, 1947. Elmer was devoted to his wife throughout their 64 years of marriage. In August 1967, they moved to town, where he worked for the USPS and walked 12 miles a day, 6 days a week, until he retired in 1985.
Elmer was smart with numbers, old-fashioned, and resourceful. He had an abundance of common sense and his dry sense of humor brought laughter to others. When younger, he loved dancing and playing cards, and when older, he enjoyed gardening and bird watching. Bacon and eggs were his favorite breakfast foods even until the end of his life. He enjoyed spending time with his loved ones and traveling with Mary Patricia to visit family. Elmer had a gentle and strong quiet presence.
Those left to honor his memory include sons: Robert of Davenport, IA, John of DeWitt, IA, Randy (Mary) of Princeton, NJ, and daughter Suzanne (Roger) Warner of Chicago, IL. Grandchildren: Jonathan (Anne Marie) Warner of Kalamazoo, MI, Jason (Beth) Warner of Glen Carbon, IL, Catherine (Jordan) Short of Nashville, TN, Adelaide (Albert) Copeland of Birmingham, AL, Olivia Haase of Boston, MA, and Julianna Haase of Princeton, NJ. Great grandchildren: Holly and Laura Warner of Kalamazoo, MI, Avery and Luke Warner of Glen Carbon, IL, Phoenix Short of Nashville, TN, and Margaret Copeland of Birmingham, AL, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Patricia, and sisters Arline Marti and Mardell Paustian, both of Davenport.
The family wishes to thank the administrative and office personnel, social workers, nurses, CNAs, dietary staff, house cleaning staff, and activities staff of Good Samaritan Nursing Home for their loving and compassionate care of Elmer. Gratitude also goes to the chaplains, nurses, CNAs and social workers of Compassus Hospice and St. Croix Hospice for their additional support and guidance.
