

Funeral services for George N. Phelps, 81, of Davenport, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at the Cunnick-Collins Mortuary chapel in Davenport. Interment will follow at the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery in Rock Island, IL. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #26. The family will greet friends on Wednesday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the mortuary. Mr. Phelps passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2011 at Trinity, Rock Island. George Nelson Phelps was born in Tipton, IA on February 21, 1930, the son of Milo and Laura (Domer) Phelps. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On December 12, 1976, he married Margo K. Guilfoyle. Throughout the years, Mr. Phelps owned and operated various area nightclubs including: the Granada Lounge, Act One, Red Caboose, Executive, Spirit of St. Louis, PJ’s, Dynamite Lounge, and the Viking Inn. During his years of nightclub ownership, he hosted several well-known musicians at his nightclubs, which included REO Speedwagon, Chubby Checkers, Tony Belson, Louis Belson, Pearl Bailey, and Cheap Trick. Most recently Mr. Phelps worked as a realtor for Mel Foster and Century 21. He was active in the Davenport Moose, Davenport American Legion, and was an avid racecar fan. He enjoyed restoring old tractors, fine dining, camping, fishing, and boating. In his early years, he was very active in baseball and track, in which he won many medals. He also served as captain of his high school football team. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his Wife: Margo of Davenport; a Daughter: Kim Brewer of Bettendorf, IA; a Son: Michael Phelps of Andulusia, IL; a Sister: Jo Chrencik of Burmingham, AL; 6 Grandchildren and a Great-grandson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three Sisters: Evelyn, Margaret, and Nellie; and two Brothers: Leslie and Milo “Mike.”
