

Born December 8, 1944, in Davenport, Iowa, to Clarence and Dorothy Messer, Jerry graduated from Davenport schools and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1963. He served during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1967.
Jerry dedicated his career to advocating for workers’ rights as a leader with UFCW Local 431 and the International UFCW, where he organized drives, lobbied on key issues, and supported political initiatives. A committed Democrat, he was widely regarded as the go-to resource for candidates and community members seeking guidance on local and national political matters. He also served as President of the Quad City Federation of Labor.
Jerry retired in 2018 as President of Local 431. In retirement, Jerry and his wife enjoyed traveling, dining at new restaurants, relaxing in their backyard, and hosting family and friends.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Pam Heiser Messer (d. 2003); and his son, Christopher (d. 2020).
He is survived by his wife, Diana Dempsey Messer (married 2013); his grandson Austin (from his marriage to Pam); two stepdaughters; four stepsons; numerous step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his sister, Shirley Keeney.
Per Jerry’s wishes, no funeral services will be held.
