Greg was born September 15, 1952 in Davenport, Iowa, the first-born child of Allan and Shirley Arp. He grew up an active member of 4H and graduated from Central High School in 1970. Greg attended Iowa State University, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, graduating in 1975. Greg began his own business as a homebuilder in 1980. He married Vicky Schroeder in 1982 at Zion Lutheran Church, where they are members. They welcomed twins, Christopher and Laura in 1985. Greg continued his business, Greg Arp Homebuilders until 2009, building over 200 quality, custom homes in the Quad Cities and surrounding areas.
Greg took pride in being a member of the 1970 State Basketball championship team at Central High School. He was an active member in many organizations, supporting his children and the community as Emeis Little League president and coach, Wilson Elementary School Dad’s Club president and coach and board member of the West High Booster Club. Greg received a HUG Award for his work in building an outdoor classroom at Wilson Elementary School. He built many stage props and decorations for the West High Student Senate and show choirs which are still in use today. He thoroughly enjoyed spending Friday nights under the Brady Street lights cooking pork chops for the Falcon supporters. In 2009, Greg was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Quad City Homebuilders Association. One of Greg’s other favorite things was spending quality time with family and friends, building with his fraternity brothers the most elaborate VEISHEA floats ISU had seen in the 1970’s, taking many cruises, tailgating Saturday afternoon at Kinnick Stadium, and enjoying FAW, Friday after work, by the pool. Greg reveled in the “House Divided” rivalry with his son, a University of Iowa student. Greg’s proudest accomplishment was watching his children grow up and become successful doctors in their fields of study. In conjunction with Greg’s belief in the importance of higher education, he has chosen to donate his body to the University of Iowa to help others achieve their educational goals.
Those remembering and loving Greg include his wife of 28 years, Vicky; children, Laura and Tony Frankowski and Christopher Arp; mother, Shirley; brother, Brent and Nancy Arp; sisters, Julie and Regis Rulifson and Jane Tomesch; sister-in-law, Penny and Bill Dressler; many nieces and nephews; and many special friends.
