

Loved and loving, Lois G. Kahler died on December 21, 2011, in Bettendorf, IA. A service in celebration of her life- will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, January 6, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church, Davenport.She was born May 23, 1920 in Lake Forest, IL, the daughter of James A. and Nelle (Atteridge) Griffis. She attended Ferry Hall Academy and graduated from Lake Forest High School. She attended MacMurray College, Jacksonville, IL, and graduated from Katharine Gibbs School, after which she worked at Great Lakes Naval Base. It was there she met handsome Lieutenant Orville Kahler, who became her beloved husband January 19, 1946. They moved to Davenport, IA, where they lived, loved, shared the joy of raising two children, and relished the time they spent with many friends.Lois, a consummate “people person,” readily shared conversations, smiles and laughter with family and friends, offering sound advice. She was an avid reader and bridge player. She had a lifelong love affair with the Northwoods of Wisconsin, where she spent childhood summers at Trout Lake. She passed that passion on to her children and grandchildren, who continue to enjoy the crisp air, refreshing lakes, and songs of the loon. She will be remembered as a wife, mother, grandmother and friend who was honest and true, found humor in many situations, and who exhibited a deep loyalty and unwavering love and commitment to those who were part of her life.Lois was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Davenport, and PEO Chapter GW. She volunteered with St. Luke’s/Genesis Auxiliary. She was a member of many bridge clubs, the “Mermaids,” and the Saturday morning breakfast group.She was preceded in death by two brothers and her husband. Survivors include children Lynnell Edwards Havercamp (Alan) and Bruce Kahler, Davenport, grandchildren Amanda Edwards (David Dude), West Branch, IA, Jesse Kahler (Leslie) and Cody Kahler, Bettendorf, great grandchildren Maren, Benjamin, and Kirsten Edwards, brother James Griffis (Kera), Delray Beach, FL, and numerous nieces and nephews.Memorials can be made to First Presbyterian Church Music Department, 1702 Iowa Street, Davenport, IA or MacMurray College, Jacksonville, IL.
