

The Rev. Thomas Kalshoven, former Executive Director of Churches United of the Quad City Area died on Monday December 5th,2016 at Crest Health Care Center, Davenport, Iowa.Mr. Kalshoven was born April 12, 1931 in New York City, the son of William Kalshoven and Elizabeth Csokany Kalshoven. He married Mary Rienbeck in Watertown, NY on September 17, 1955. Prior to coming to this area, he had served in pastorates in Watertown, Jamesville, and Menands New York, and served with the Presbyterian Board of Missions and ecumenically with the Syracuse Area Council of Churches and the Ohio Council of Churches as a research and planning specialist. He was called to the work of Churches United in 1973 and retired in 1991. He was a graduate of Cornell University and Union Theological Seminary, and attended the Maxwell School of Social Sciences of Syracuse University.Mr. Kalshoven was widely known here for his work in the mission programs of Churches United. Under his leadership much of the hunger alleviation provided by food pantries, meal sites, and CROP walks took shape and continue to this day. He worked cooperatively with many agencies and programs, and frequently served on their Boards or planning committees. In addition he was an advocate for human rights and racial and economic justice. After his retirement he was honored by the Martin Luther King Day coalition, the QC Holocaust Committee and CommUniversity. He was most touched by an editorial commending him as “the conscience of the Quad Cities.” He is survived by his wife Mary, children; David Kalshoven and Jane Grimstad of Middleton,WI, Karen and Wayne Hean of Davenport IA, and Peter and Isabelle Kalshoven of Rock Hill, SC, grandchildren; Kathryn (Joel) Hasenmiller, James Hean, William Hean, Daniel Kalshoven, Jonathan Kalshoven , Emily Kalshoven and Ashley Earley, great grandchildren; Elizabeth Hasenmiller and Thomas Hasenmiller.A Memorial Service will be 11:00 am on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church, Davenport. Family will greet friends on Friday January 20th, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport.Inurnment will be later in Riverside Cemetery, Cape Vincent, New York.Memorials may be sent to Churches United, the Ridgecrest Foundation, or First Presbyterian Church in Davenport.
