Richard “Dick” Huff, 85, passed away on Friday, June 14, 2024 at the Wilton Retirement Community. Services to honor his memory will be held on Friday, June 21, 2024 at 11:30 am at Weerts Funeral Home; visitation will be before the service beginning at 9am. Memorials in Dick’s name may be made to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office DARE Program or to the Beth Grunder Scholarship Fund.
Dick entered this world on Friday, June 2, 1939 in Vernon, Iowa to Brooks and Helen (Riedel) Huff; he was the oldest of five children. Dick graduated from Bonaparte High School with the class of 1956 at 16 years old. At 17, he joined the United States Army and did two tours of duty in Germany and France. In the 1960’s he moved to Davenport to find employment with JI Case and Mid-American Energy. He met Billie Plambeck Marshal and they married on July 23, 1966 and he became an “instant” father to Jeff and Michael. Dick joined the Scott County Sheriff’s Department on October 11, 1976 as a Deputy and retired on March 29, 2002 as Sheriff. After retirement, he and Billie started traveling to Arizona for the winter; they first started out with just a truck and trailer but they quickly purchased a home. Dick soon found that he could go to garage sales during the winter in Arizona and in the summer in Iowa. Billie sadly passed away on January 1, 2007 at the hospice house in Bettendorf. Dick moved to his new residence on Cedar Street, where he met Linda Grunder; he asked her out and as the saying goes, “the rest was history”. Dick and Linda were united in marriage on January 11, 2011 at 1:11 pm and he acquired his “bonus children” Beth and Michael and granddaughter Natalie.
Those left to honor his memory are his wife of 13 years, Linda; children Jeff (Beja), Michael (Lisa); grandchildren Janelle (Jimmy) Patterson, Jason Thompson, Jennifer (Tommy) Mizer, and Jordan Huff; great-grandchildren Ethan Thompson, Courtney Patterson, Cory Patterson, Kaleb Levi, Kenzlee Levi, and Alexis Anderson; siblings Leonora Spencer, Linda (Larry) Sheffler, and Barb (Tom) Herbert; along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Billie, brother Ronnie, and bonus daughter Beth.
