Watching Fail Army videos before bed today and could’ve sworn I saw my old friend.   Reminded me of all the great talks we had online on the rec.games.chess newsgroups and all the amazing sparring matches we had over the chess board 20-some years ago.  The world is dimmer without Roger for sure.  Miss you, old friend.

Roger changed my life! I will be forever be grateful for what he did! Rest in peace.

There will never be another you, Rog. Thank you for such wonderful memories.  I love you with all my broken heart and always will.

Roger had the biggest heart, I helped around Rogers & Jill’s house for around 4 months. Through so little time I could tell you Roger was one of the sweetest, loving, & funniest human beings around. He had the cutest smile, I remember always walking in and seeing Roger with a smile, some days I would walk in and ask him how his day was and he’d be sarcastic and tell me it was horrible and then giggle, & tell me he’s just kidding, or the times I’d be in the other room and I would look at him and he’d make a silly face at me and laugh.  One time I accidentally ran into his chair with the vacuum and Roger looked at me very seriously and shook his finger “shame shame” then we both laughed. One of my favorite memories of roger was when he had came home from the hospital that morning and I had came over.  Right when I walked inside Roger goes “wowww you’re looking thin” and I replied with “well thank you Roger” throughout the time I was there Roger was cracking jokes every second and being so outgoing. I had never seen Roger like that and it made my day. I loved that he was being so himself.  I loved that for him. Jill had left to go grab lunch and as I sat across from Roger he sat there and told me how much he loved Jill and how much he appreciates her and every thing she does for him. Roger loved jill so so much. There was a time when I got to watch Roger work with his physical therapist. When he stood up and walked with his walker I couldn’t stop smiling I was so so proud of him. I love that memory. Roger will definitely be missed by so many, he was a wonderful man

This was a photo taken at Jumer’s casino when my husband and I met Roger and Jill for brunch. My greatest memory of Roger was him teaching my youngest son how to play blackjack. He was such an intelligent and kind soul with a giant sense of humor. I’m honored to have known him.

Sending my deepest sympathies and condolences to Roger’s family and friends. My dad, Joe Mital, was a close friend of Roger’s through Illowa Chess Club. They enjoyed teaching together and were also friendly yet fierce competitors for many years. We even spent a few holidays together in the early 2000s, with food, laughter, and side chatter always being secondary to chess.  Separately, my mom also knew Roger through numerous classes at the Arsenal and passed down many of the things she learned from Roger onto me - knowledge I continue to use and even pass onto friends. I will remember Roger as quite the character and especially cherish the friendship he had with my dad. I have no doubt they are already playing chess  and planning tournaments together on the other side. 

So sorry to hear of Roger's passing.  I met Roger years ago when I helped lead a single's group in Davenport.  Roger was such an intelligent and fun man.  There was always laughter when Roger was around.  He was a pleasure to know.  Condolences are sent to his wife and sons. 

I think it was the late 1990’s when Roger and others from the Arsenal EAP office were kind enough to serve as mentors to students at Monroe School in Davenport where I taught.  In addition Roger taught chess to some of the students. Though I haven’t seen him in years this photograph says it all.  
He always had a big smile, positive attitude, and was a great listener. The perfect adult to match with students who were in need of good influence and advice.  Bill Gallin

I’m Stephanie , I cared for Roger for only a few days but in those few days i learned a lot and seen alot. The bonds were very tight. My favorite memory in the 3-4 days i got to spend to spend with Roger were when we woke up at I was trying to help him and he  had the nicest;biggest smile on his face. We/his wife never failed to reassure him that everything was okay and we just wanted to help. Seeing him comfortable was a plus as well. I could tell Roger was a kind soul & had a big heart. prayers to him and his family as they go through this tough time. Thank you for letting me help 💟💟

Roger was much more than a close friend – we truly did consider him a member of our family, someone we loved dearly and without reservation. The times we spent with Roger were always filled with smiles and laughter, and created so many great memories that we now look back on fondly. Sadly, he is not here with us anymore to share more good times with, and that is a painful loss for us and for so many others.

Roger enriched us in so many ways, best of all when he brought Jill into our lives. Jill, you also are family, and we are so grateful for all you did for Roger and for how well you cared for him. We are here for you, now and always.
