

Graveside services for Wilbert John Poppe, 93, of Davenport will be 11:00 am on Wednesday at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, where military rites will be conducted by the American Legion #26. Family and friends wishing to attend should meet at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary at 10:15 am on Wednesday.Wilbert passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at Ridgecrest Health Care, Davenport.Cunnick-Collins Mortuary assisting family with arrangements.Wilbert John Poppe was born on January 8, 1922 in Davenport, the son of John and Hulda (Johnson) Poppe. He married Arlene June Eick on March 14, 1944, she preceded him in death. He then married Barbara Jean Belding on July 27, 1970 in Nashua, IA. He worked at Dahl Ford for 12 years and 28 years in maintenance for the Davenport Community School. He retired in 1987. He was a member of the Moline Gospel Temple where he served in the bus ministry. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he was stationed in Rheims, France and England. He received a Purple Heart for fighting during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944.He had a strong, yet kindly work ethic, Many will remember him as the head custodian at Lincoln and Hoover schools, the kids loved "Mr. Poppe."He had a wonderful knowledge of cars & could fix darn near anything. He was extremely proud of his military service. He loved the Lord and hardly ever missed a Sunday- when he was young he even rode his horse to church. He was a true gentleman with quiet manners, a loving heart, and a genuine smile that now Jesus is blessed with.Survivors include his daughters, Linda (Roger) Adams of Davenport, Monica Linville of Bettendorf, IA, Pamela (Kipp) Poppe Voges of Maryville, WA, son; David Poppe of Bettendorf, IA, grandchildren; Katelyn Adams, Paul Linville, Christina Linville, Joel Poppe Voges, Shayla Poppe Voges, Andrew Poppe Voges, and a brother; Norman Poppe of Bettendorf.He was preceded in death by his parents, wives, Arlene and Barbara, a son, Joel Matthew Poppe and sister, Lois Poppe.Memorials may be made to Westside Assembly of God Church, Davenport.Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.Cunnick-Collins.com.
