Passed peacefully on January 2, 2024 at the age of 96 in his home at Touchmark in Spokane
Washington. Jim was born August 5, 1927 to Glenn and Alta Yount in Spokane, Washington.
He grew up in Wilbur, where both his father and grandfather were once the local Physicians.
Jim graduated from Wilbur High School in 1945 and then served in the US Navy 1945-1946.
He then began his studies at Washington State College (now Washington State University).
After 3 years Jim enrolled into the University of Oregon School of Dentistry in Portland campus an
graduating in 1952. During his time in Portland Jim married his high school sweetheart, Gladys Sherwood, and their son Douglas was born.
Jim and Gladys soon moved to Tempe, Arizona to begin practicing dentistry, and daughter
Lynn was born. Jim developed a loyal and strong family client base and was Tempe’s senior
practicing dentist for 40 years until his retirement at age 65, in 1992. Jim served and chaired
on numerous dental committees: The Central Arizona Dental Society, Arizona State Board
of Dental Examiners, and Western Regional Dental Examining board. Jim is a Fellow of the
Academy of General Dentistry, a Fellow of the International College of Dentistry, and was
president of the Academy Dental Study Club.
Jim was with the Tempe Jaycees 1953-1958 and was an early board member of the Tempe
YMCA. He also served on the Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital Board and the Tempe advisory
board of Merabank. He spent 11 years on the Tempe Union High School District Governing
Board and was a Life member of the Tempe Diablos.
Jim enjoyed 56 years as a member of the Tempe Kiwanis Club. He was Kiwanian of the
year 1992 and KCOT president 1964. He was a Club humanitarian and conscience - leading
Adopt-A-Family projects and the Baby Needs Shoes efforts. For 25 years Jim was chairman
of the KCOT Corn Roast and he was chosen the George F. Hixson Fellow honoree by KCOT.
After retirement Jim and Gladys built a beautiful log home in their old stomping grounds of Wilbur, Washington, overlooking the majestic views of Lake Roosevelt. Here they joyfully hosted
family and friends from far and near. The early years of retirement saw them enjoying their Tempe home throughout the winter, then off to the lake come summer and fall. Throughout Jim’s life he enjoyed many hobbies… artist, musician and song writer, outdoorsman, hunting, fishing, camping and
family. He was a beekeeper, a conservationist and lover of wildlife. That list also included silversmith, Chili cookoff Champion (Gladys as his sidekick), golfer, woodworker, annual Christmas card maker and, starting at age 94, Author! Jim wrote A Book of Limericks and his Life book titled “Diggin’ up Bones.”
Jim is preceded in death by his wife Gladys and brother Roland. He is survived by two children; Douglas (Donna) and Lynn (Alton); his 5 grandchildren - Peter (Lisa), Jessica (Ryan), Jamie (Alissa), Nicole (Brian), and Julianne (Matt); and 10 great grandchildren - Jayd, Collin, Bo, Ava, Emilia, Cash, Paige, Isabella, Sam and Phoebe. A Celebration of life will be held in Wilbur, Washington in the spring of 2024, date to be announced.
