Larry was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 22, 1942, to his parents, Tony and Fran Juriga. The family moved to Miami Shores, Florida, where he attended Saint Rose of Lima Catholic School as well as Archbishop Curly High School. Later, he attended and graduated from St. John Vienni Seminary.
Larry met the love of his life, Nancy Hyde, while in the seminary, and they were married on September 2, 1967. They had two children, Lori Elizabeth and Laurence Robert.
Larry joined the North Miami Police Department, and was sworn-in on December 14, 1964. He honorably served the City of North Miami for 30 years. He was a proud graduate of the 103rd session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and he also served as President of the Miami-Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police (MDCACP). Additionally, Larry was an inaugural member of the Police Officer Assistance Trust (POAT).
His commitment to service extended beyond the North Miami Police Department. Larry served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve for six years and coordinated security services at Joe Robbie Stadium in the command post, from its opening in 1987, until 2018.
In 1996, Larry retired, as Deputy Chief, leaving behind a profound legacy that continued through his family. His younger brother, Jim Juriga, and his son, Larry Jr. followed in his footsteps. Jim respectfully served 30 years and Larry Juriga Jr. nobly served for 29 years, retiring as the Chief of Police.
Known for his humility, dedication to his Christian faith, and a deep sense of duty, Larry was not only a remarkable law enforcement officer, but also a beloved husband, father, mentor, and friend. His acts of kindness and commitment to service will be remembered by the community he protected and by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Fran Juriga, as well as his daughter, Lori Carter Juriga.
Larry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy (Hyde); his son, Larry, and his daughter-in-law Sallie, along with five grandchildren, Julia, Kyle, Olivia, Ashley, and Amelia; his younger brother, Jim Juriga, and his sister-in-law, Chita. Larry had 19 nieces and nephews (Juriga, Hyde, Wilson and Ross), 31 cousins (Trowbridge), and extended family throughout the country.
Larry will always be loved and missed.
