He spent 52 years with the love of his life, Delores Brainard. They shared a love few are fortunate to find.
He retired from GM Delphi Automotive, where he sometimes worked seven days a week, and will be remembered for his strong-willed nature.
Charles loved bluegrass music and taught himself to play the mandolin. He was often found working on crossword puzzles while enjoying the companionship of his dog, Ricky. He loved watching and attending Bengals games and NASCAR races, often going with his lifelong friend from fourth grade, Hubie Conover. For 25 years, he was a regular at Waffle House, where he spent time with friends, especially Jerry Ferris. He also loved to tinker with his beloved truck at Talbot’s Garage, often visiting with his dear friend Troy Real on a weekly basis. He enjoyed going to Tumbleweed with his granddaughter Tuscia to listen to live music. He loved having friends and family over for Fourth of July gatherings.
He always kept an open door for his six children and grandchildren. They knew they always had a second home with him, where they were always welcome.
In his early years, he visited his maternal grandparents’ Hutchinson family farm in Kentucky, where he helped his grandma put the animals back into the barn. In his school days, he sketched imaginative characters that became tattoos for others.
He is survived by his family: Robert Lackey, Lucille (Leonard) Kaczynski, Gail Vlahos, Tammy (Jeff) Barton, and Shelly (Dave) Dixon, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Essie and Wayne Brainard; his beloved wife, Delores; his daughter, Vickie Day; and his daughter-in-law, Irene Lackey.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who knew and loved him.
