KENNING, Darryl K. died peacefully on Thursday March 23, 2017 at the Bethany Lutheran Village in Centerville, Ohio following a battle with Lewy Body disease. He was 75. A beloved husband, father and grandfather, Darryl leaves behind his wife Susan Burton Kenning, his sons Kevin Kenning and Christopher Kenning, and Christopher’s wife Tricia and his grandchildren Rowan, Hayden and Charlotte; sister-in-law Cindy Levy, her husband Doug Levy and their children Bethany, Jessica and Adrienne; sister-in-law Pam Bonomini and her husband Randy and their children Justin, Megan and Ryan; and other extended family members and friends. Raised in Cincinnati, where he attended high school and enjoyed riding his motorcycle, Darryl joined the US Navy in 1959, serving on the USS Caloosahatchee, a tanker that refueled ships during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and aboard the naval icebreaker USS Edisto in Antarctica. Darryl was honorably discharged in 1962 and enrolled at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, where he went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. It was there that he met and courted Susan Burton, also of Cincinnati. The pair were married in 1965, living in married student housing before graduating and working in city government in Detroit and Arlington Heights, Illinois, where their two sons were born. In 1974, the family moved to Centerville, Ohio where Darryl served as the City Manager until 1992, guiding the small city as it grew over the years. Darryl was a member of many professional organizations, and after retiring he was repeatedly called upon to serve as interim city manager in various cities including Oxford, Ohio. The couple had a second home on the beach in Marco Island, Florida, a place that Darryl loved. Darryl enjoyed reading from his large collection of vintage paperback science fiction, working with computers, creating stained glass art, listening to country music including Jimmy Buffett and spending time with friends and family. Private services were held on March 29, 2017 at David’s Cemetery in Kettering, where he was buried near his relatives. The family wishes to thank the caring staff of Bethany Village-BP.
