Frederick P. Geitner Jr. was born in St. Mary's, Pennsylvania, the second-youngest of eight children, descended from Bavarian immigrants. Fred graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in St. Mary's, Pennsylvania in 1950. Two years later he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served two years, stationed in Hanau, Germany. He was honourably discharged in 1954, having attained the rank of corporal. (Fred fondly recalled a jaunt to Paris during that time with some Army buddies when they all managed to get a weekend pass.) After discharge he went to Penn State University, DuBois campus, where he earned an associate degree in mechanical engineering in 1958. A couple years later Fred met Angeline Serafini, whom he would marry in 1961, a union that lasted 57 years. They made a great couple. His passion for music, from American Standards to polkas, paired well with her love of dancing. He was soft-spoken, she could be a spitfire. He loved to joke and she loved to laugh. Together, they started a new life in Philadelphia and raised three children: Janet, Paul and David. During his career he worked as a draftsman and estimator for various companies, pricing aluminum components for construction projects including the original Trump Tower in New York. His work brought the family to western Michigan in 1976, where he became deeply involved with St. Mary's Catholic Church, singing in the choir and serving with the Knights of Columbus (Council 1300). Twice he was honored as Knight of the Month, in 2001 and 2002, for his "enthusiasm and spirit of community," and became a lifetime honorary member. After retirement Fred stayed busy with real estate courses, woodworking, crossword puzzles (eventually branching out to Sudoku), reading murder mysteries, playing the organ and occasionally hauling out his accordion. He and Angie moved in 2004 to Centerville, Ohio, close to their eldest child and her family. Fred and Angie moved to Kettering in 2017 and passed peacefully at home less than two weeks apart. Fred is survived by his two sons and a brother, Francis, as well as six grandchildren: Chad, Brian and Jason Sheets and Kyla, Tyler and McKenzie Geitner. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his wife's memory to the National Stroke Association www.stroke.org.
