

He graduated from Greenville High School in 1957 and earned his B.A. in Education from Miami University in 1961, where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon.
He volunteered for the US Army, and trained at Defense Language Institute to be a Russian linguist. He was stationed in Sinop, Turkey with the Army Security Agency.
After his discharge, he earned an M.A. in History at Miami. It was also there that he met his future wife, Kathleen.
He taught history and social studies for Xenia City Schools from 1967-1992, at Warner Junior High and Central Junior High. After retirement, he served as a substitute teacher at Beavercreek High School.
He was a former member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church and a current member of Aley United Methodist Church.
He was also a member of Boy Scout Troop 85's Catholic Committee on Scouting, and of the Civil War Roundtable of Dayton.
Surviving him are his wife, Kathleen A. (Hale) O'Brien; two sons, Sean P. O'Brien of Alexandria VA, and Kevin M. O'Brien of Beavercreek; a daughter, Maureen S. O'Brien of Fairborn; a sister, Margaret A. (O'Brien) Kleehammer of Rochester, NY; and eight nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 12:30 PM at St. John Bosco Chapel, Catholic Campus Ministry, 2650 Colonel Glenn Hwy. (behind Allyn Hall, along University Blvd. in Wright State University). Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Dayton.
