

John was born in Dayton, Ohio on December 16, 1957 to George and Norine (Amyx) Schaeffer. He had a lifelong passion for sports, competition, music, and most importantly, family. John would love to be remembered for his passion for life and the joy he brought to innumerable family and friends. John met his wife, Patricia, in high school and they were set to celebrate 48 years of marriage this year. They enjoyed family vacations and maintained a “twinkle” in their eyes for each other.
John graduated from Carroll High School in 1976 where he played football, basketball, and baseball and is enshrined in their Athletic Hall of Fame. He worked at Toolcraft Products and retired after 42 years. He worked alongside his dad George, uncle Clyde, and brothers Ed and Bob over the years. His motto was “work hard, play hard.”
John was a lifelong fan of Ohio State football, Cincinnati Reds baseball, and University of Dayton basketball. He hosted weekly Ohio State gameday parties, attended 47 Reds Opening Day games and was a UD season ticket holder. He was active in sports and numerous clubs throughout his life and most recently was a member of the Falcon Club where he enjoyed the camaraderie and brotherhood amongst the members and their families. The Falcon Club awarded him in 2024 with the Russ Willoughby Sportsmanship Award for his volunteerism. Always at the ready for his family and friends to help when needed and to offer support and happiness as he could. He was the life of the party, always making sure people were enjoying themselves.
John was a proud husband, father, and grandfather. He leaves behind his wife, Patricia (Mark) Schaeffer, children Jacob (Beth) Schaeffer, Maureen Schaeffer, and Molly (Dylan) Dullea as well as his beloved grandchildren, Owen Schaeffer, Merritt Dullea, Colton Schaeffer, Lachlan Dullea, and Kora Schaeffer. His mother Norine Schaeffer, siblings Ed (Kathleen) Schaeffer, Carol Ballman, Jenny (Mike) Kothman, Rita (Del) Casson, Tom (Steve) Schaeffer, Laura (Rick) Clemens, Bob (Melissa) Schaeffer, and Joe (Krista) Schaeffer. In-laws Joe (Peggy) Mark, Tim (Joan) Mark, Sue (Joe) Meintel, and Peggy (Bob) Wiggins. As well has many nieces, nephews, and hundreds of friends. John was preceded in death by his father George, in-laws James and Dolores (Schmid) Mark, and nephew Zach Schaeffer.
John will be remembered for his huge heart, competitiveness, and joy that he brought to others.
Visitation for John will be held on Monday, April 13, 2026 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, with a service starting at 3:00 pm at Tobias Funeral Home, 3970 Dayton-Xenia Rd, in Beavercreek, OH.
