

THUNEY, John William, born 7-27-26 to Mathilda and Francis Thuney in Cincinnati, Ohio, died peacefully at Miami Valley South on 12-6-15, surrounded by his family. Jack was the youngest of 5 children, the only son preceded in death by his mother and father and sisters, Mary Jane and Carol. He was married to Zara Lee Thuney (nee Howe) for 32 years who passed away in 1984. He is survived by his sisters Angela Kropfeld and Margorie Kunz. He is also survived by his children John Michael, wife Beth, Mark, wife Teri and Marcia and partner, Lynne. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren; Monica Shawcross (nee Thuney), Eric Thuney, Megan Thuney, Joseph Thuney, Zachary Thuney, Matthew Thuney and Jacob Thuney. He is also survived by 2 great-grandchildren, Jack Thuney and Evelyn Colhoun, all of whom he loved dearly. Jack was a veteran of WWII, proudly serving his country in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946. He came back to Cincinnati and met the love of his life, Zara, and was married in 1951. Jack and Zara moved to Dayton in 1959 where he began a long career in the tile industry at Gitzinger Marble & Tile. He subsequently purchased the company and successfully ran the business, finally retiring in 1988. Jack was a very social man who didn’t know a stranger. His many interests included Red’s baseball, Notre Dame, Western Kentucky and North Carolina State football, travel and enjoying Sunday dinners with his family. He spent many winters in his second home in Sebring, Florida. Jack, who had been widowed since 1984, married Patricia Schlein in 1998 and they enjoyed a wonderful life until her death in 2013. Jack and his family would like to thank the staff and physicians at Miami Valley South Hospital and a special thank you to Dr. Steven Wenzke, his cardiologist and confidante. Jack is being interred at Calvary Cemetery following the Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Trinity Church, 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 9, 2015.
