Dad, I remember the times spent outside, the desire to teach us to know science and math as fast as you (and we weren’t that fast, except maybe Laura), the instant communication with dogs, and the ability to see every problem as easily solvable. Illness took a lot of opportunities away and that is my deepest regret. I wish you could have seen and visited the farm house we built and the small farm we run.  I wish you could have watched the dozen deer tromping thru the new garden, and sat with mom on the porch watching the many birds. Long illness kept you away from so many things. Your last few days, a house wren sang cheerfully at the back door.  The day after you died, four purple martins showed up for the first time at my yard. I believe you sent them and when I see them, I remember you.

Words cannot express the love and respect I have for you my friend. I will miss our many talks and will reflect on them often. Thank you for the opportunity to revel in your knowledge.  I wish you fair winds and following seas, and when we meet again I have no doubt we will enjoy another talk.

There are so many things that I want to say.  Thank you dad for so many enduring gifts in this life.  I have you to thank for my love of science and problem solving.  For my gift of divergent thinking and making obvious connections that aren’t obvious to most people.  I thank you for my love of the outdoors, gardening, camping and nature.  You once told me that the more you know about nature the more amazing it becomes. I find this to be very true.  I am so thankful for the support you have given me.  I will miss you dad, but I know I will see you again.  Love Laura

My dad enjoyed making a particular comment when he pointed out things that to him were perfectly clear : “It’s obvious to the most casual observer” ... I find myself using that comment on occasion.  Glad you were my dad- love, Suzan.

We didnt have much time to get to know each other in the beginning. After the kids came, and Donna was watching mine while I worked, I got to know Joe when I would pick up my kids.  Joe was a very private man but because I was a few years older than he, I thought I ought to know some stuff better than he.  But Joe was smart.  And he knew he was smarter than me.  So the game was on.  We began to challenge each other and he nearly always won. But I'd give him a smile that said you just think you won.  And we'd try it again the next day.  As Joe's  MS began to take his ability I'd go down to see him before we would leave his house.  He'd raise his eyebrows and would say " don't even start ".  You won Joe.

Joe was my uncle and part of my life for as long as I can remember.   I was fortunate to spend many hours at my aunt and uncles house when I was growing up.  So many memories!  But there is one in particular that I have always loved.  As you all know Uncle Joe loved technology before it was cool.  I remember him using those new fangled VCR's to tape Star Trek and introducing me to Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock.  I also remember arguing with my cousins about who was cuter.  😉  That one simple thing encouraged me to think about "what if" and use my imagination.   There were also more subtle under currents of social justice I'm sure I didn't appreciate at the time but certainly do now.  So good bye Uncle Joe.  I wish I had shared my memories and gratitude with you when I could be there but hope you know now.

It was a privilege to work with Joe for almost 20 years in what eventually became the Air Force Research Laboratory Sensors Directorate.  Joe was an extremely knowledgeable individual and so a natural role for him was a mentor, directing the research that our group performed in order to carry out his vision of the Sensors Directorate’s mission. Joe was an exceptionally talented research scientist who explored many varied cutting-edge research projects, skillfully navigating through potential pitfalls ensuring a successful outcome for most of his contract endeavors.  As a team leader, Joe was able to see the “big picture” so working with Joe was a very pleasant experience. There was many a meeting where visitors would comment (subtly to their seated neighbor) how intelligent they thought Joe was.  Over the years I spent many hours in conversation with Joe; he had exceptional insight and because of our mutual interests, Joe and I enjoyed music and gardening.  For many years we exchanged various seeds and seedlings for planting, especially chili peppers, I could look to Joe with confidence for both professional and personal direction and I still sometimes speak of some of his insights. After Joe retired the gap he left was felt across the Division.  I could only hope to achieve the same success as Joe had for my own program efforts, but alas, that was not to be the case.

Joe was my high school sweetheart and my best friend.  We helped each other achieve our dreams.  We laughed and cried together and shared the joys of parenthood.  We started out with nothing but our love and a lot of determination.  The journey was worth the effort and we never regretted choosing our path together. We were married 56 years.   Life was sweeter with him and I shall never forget his generous and loving heart.  Donna
