Mary H. Gromosiak, 82, of Dayton, Ohio, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on August 19, 1943, in Dayton, Mary lived a life rich with laughter, purpose, and an endless supply of food for anyone who walked through her door.
A proud Dayton native, Mary attended St. Anthony School, Julienne High School, and Wright State University, where she pursued a degree for geology. She began her career at NCR, later returning to the classroom at Miami-Jacobs to prepare for a position that suited her perfectly — serving as an administrative assistant at Wright State University’s School of Medicine. Her dedication, organization, and sense of humor made her a beloved presence to colleagues and students alike.
Mary was the heart and hub of her family. She is survived by her devoted husband Michael R. Gromosiak, her son Michael A. (Stephanie D.) Gromosiak, and her cherished grandsons Kellen M. and Tucker J. Gromosiak, who brought her endless pride and joy. She also leaves behind her sister Carolyn Kerr and brothers John, Robert, and Steve Wieland — along with a lifetime of friends who could all tell a story about being fed far more than they expected. Mary was preceded in death by her loving parents, Bernard and Janice Wieland, and her brother Paul Wieland, all of whom surely welcomed her home with open arms.
A true adventurer, Mary loved traveling — whether it was exploring the corners of the U.S. or venturing to Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. At home, she could often be found with a good book in one hand and a wooden spoon in the other, cooking up something delicious for the next big family gathering.
Mary’s community spirit shone through her active involvement with the Beavercreek Jaycees, where she and her husband formed countless friendships and lasting memories while contributing to local events and projects. Her circle of friends was wide and full of laughter — too many to name — but she held especially dear Sybil Shimovetz, Karen Wolf, Eleanor Kline, Jill Melton Getty, and Gerry Petrak, each of whom shared in her love of life, family, and a good story.
And of course, no reflection on Mary’s life would be complete without mentioning Nancy, her faithful hairdresser and friend for over 50 years. Their weekly visits were less about hair and more about heart — filled with laughter, storytelling, and decades of friendship that kept Mary looking (and feeling) her best.
Mary also devoted many years to documenting her family’s genealogy, preserving not just names and dates but the stories and spirit of the generations that came before. Her detailed records and passion for family history became a gift to future generations — a legacy her son continues to cherish and build upon. Through her careful work, the Gromosiak and Wieland family trees will continue to grow strong, rooted in the love and curiosity she inspired.
Mary’s greatest gift was her ability to connect people — she was the steady matriarch who kept the family close, cared lovingly for her parents in their later years, and never missed an opportunity to bring everyone together around a table (and then send them home with leftovers). Her warmth, humor, and generosity made her a cornerstone in the lives of those lucky enough to know her.
Though her chair at the table may now be empty, the recipes, stories, and love she shared will continue to nourish her family for generations to come.
Mary will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery, 1625 Calvary Dr., Dayton, Ohio 45409.
