Born on September 28, 1942, in Ahndong-Gun, a province in South Korea, Rita was the fourth eldest daughter of eight siblings to Hwang Eul Yong and Woo Han Kim.
Rita’s life took a significant turn in 1964 when she met Eugene Selconis during his military tour in Korea, where he served as a sergeant in the US Army. Their love blossomed, leading to a 36-year marriage before Gene’s passing in 2000.
In 1975, Rita received her US citizenship and she was passionate about learning English as a second language. She completed EOSL courses and continued adult education classes.
Rita enjoyed playing Bingo and made a close circle of friends in the Bingo communities of Carroll High School and St. Mary Help of Christians. She also found joy in making silk flowers and collecting souvenir spoons from around the world.
Rita was a devoted member of Our Lady Queen of Peace at Wright Patterson AFB. She served as a Eucharistic minister for a time and was actively involved in parish activities. It was there that she met some of her closest friends.
Rita’s legacy will be cherished by her family, including her daughter Theresa Subr, son-in-law Robert Subr, grandchildren Emily Noriega-Subr, Megan Pumper-Subr, and Jared Subr; as well as her siblings Jae Ha Cho, Choon Ha Cho, Ok Soon Woodby, Ok Bun Hwang, Catherine Hyeon, and Yong Cheol Hwang; and numerous cherished nieces, nephews, and their children.
