

Born 10 Nov 27 in Elkton, MD, to James Albert Mentzer and Ardella (Biddle). At age 17, his sister Nellie, raising him after the death of his parents, signed a waiver to allow him to enlist as PFC into the US Army on 16 Jul 45. He served in Company B, 350th Infantry. Stationed at Tarcento, Italy, and then Fort Sill, OK. Honorably discharged 29 Jun 49.
Went on to enlist into the US Air Force on 13 Feb 1951. Assignments included Honolulu, HI, Miami, FL, Elmendorf AFB, AK, Westover AFB, MA, Edwards AFB, CA, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. Served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam Conflict. After serving for 26 years, he retired at the rank of MSgt from active duty 30 Apr 73.
Throughout his military career, both Army and Air Force, he was awarded the Army of Occupation WWII Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Heroic or Meritorious Achievement Medal, AF Commendation Medal, and Joint Service Commendation Medal.
After active duty, he then began a career as a DoD civilian for the USAF. Assigned to the F-15 SPO and the F-16 SPO. He retired from civil service on 1 May 90.
Robert was married to Millicent (Kubilis) until her death in December 2014. He leaves behind one daughter, Roberta Sirks, son-in-law Christopher Sirks, many beloved nieces and nephews, step-grandchildren and great step-grandchildren.
Robert was a long-time member of Aley Methodist Church in Beavercreek, OH. He truly enjoyed playing golf. He had many dear friends through church and golfing as well as long-time friends from his working years.
He was always ready to tell a story or a joke to anyone. He will be missed by all.
