Roy was born April 7th, 1948 in Dayton, Ohio. His family later moved to Beavercreek where he spent his younger days as a newspaper delivery boy. His father was a military veteran and later worked setting print for the newspaper and as a mechanic, working out of his garage. His mother was a homemaker and worked on the accounting books for his father’s business. Roy graduated from Beavercreek High School in 1966 where he was a member of the Chess Club and the Football Manager. He commuted to the University of Dayton, where he often spent lunch time playing cards in the Flyers Hangar with other commuters. This is when his love of the UD Flyers began, while they still played games in the old Fieldhouse. He graduated from the University of Dayton in 1970 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He started his career at ComGeneral Corporation where he designed, built and tested electro-mechanical devices for various government projects. Roy continued his career at Dayton Walther Corporation as Project Engineer and then at Price Brothers as a Design Engineer. In 1978 he became Chief Engineer and Senior Project Engineer with Sheffield Machine Tool Co. and then spent 16 years with Joyce/Dayton Corporation as the Corporate Chief Engineer. After Joyce/Dayton closed their hydraulic lift division, Roy worked at Motoman Inc. in Dayton and Sweet Manufacturing in Springfield. Roy loved his work as a Mechanical Engineer and enjoyed mentoring college students in the engineering field. In the early 1970’s he was active in the Beavercreek Jaycees and the Catholic Alumni Club (CAC), Dayton Chapter. Through the CAC, Roy helped serve meals at St. Vincent, planned social events, went on camping trips, and participated in many sporting activities. Members always said Roy was very welcoming to everyone. Roy later joined The Knights of Columbus at Ascension Catholic Church. Throughout his life, Roy was also an avid sports fan. He loved all sports, but he especially loved cheering on the UD Flyers Basketball Team and was a season ticket holder since the arena opened, recording each basket on his score card. He enjoyed watching the Reds and Dragons baseball teams and was a season ticket holder for the Bengals for many seasons. Roy was a history “buff” and was very knowledgeable in so many areas. He loved visiting historical sites, monuments, and museums with his family. The Air Force Museum was a local favorite of his. He shared this love and his love of cars, model railroading, train travel, playing cards/games and camping with Alex early on, creating and developing many fond memories, hobbies, and collections that still remain with him. As a father, Roy loved supporting and being involved in Alex’s activities through volunteering at swim meets, grade school volleyball, and the (Archbishop) Carroll High School Marching Band. Through these activities, Roy made even more good friends. During his lifetime, Roy enjoyed going on cruises, gambling at casinos, playing golf with his good friends in the Ascension Golf League, coin collecting, trivia nights with his volleyball team, playing Scrabble, yearly golf outings for the Roy Mead Invitational (RMI), dealing Black Jack at festivals, camping with friends, playing on softball and volleyball teams, boating/house-boating, bowling with his team “Nerds R Us” for the last 36 years, and watching Alex perform with the Miami University Marching Band, the Pride of Dayton Marching Band, and the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps. However, even with all these activities, what Roy enjoyed most was being a loving husband to Linda and loving father to Alex.
Roy was preceded in death by his father Arthur Mead and mother Clara (Hecker) Mead of Beavercreek, Ohio. He is survived by his loving wife Linda (Edly) Mead and son Alex, cousin Vicki Plessinger, sisters-in-law Karen (Edly) Cardone and Janet (Edly) Borton, brothers-in-law, Anthony Cardone and Chuck Borton, nephew and nieces Alissa Cardone, Michael Cardone, Becca Borton, Ella Borton, Ava Borton, and Oreo, the family cat.
Roy was blessed to have amazing friends and caregivers while he was at home, including Anita and the staff at Dynamic Solutions, his close friends Jenny and Denise, Matt, a close family friend, and caregivers Marissa and Bethany. During this time, Roy looked forward to his monthly bowling team lunches and various outings with Bob, Rick and John. Roy was also blessed with wonderful and caring neighbors and longtime neighbors/friends Rick and Rosalie and their family, along with all his friends from the CAC.
