Thoughts and prayers to the Sorg family.  I worked with Sharon for many years, and some in the Precious Beginnings Home Care.  She always had such a positive attitude during her illness, a sweet spirit and a sense of humor that was infectious.  An awesome nurse who was such an advocate for moms and babies.   I was blessed to have known her.

Sharon Ann Sorg (Long) 
Eulogy
October 14, 1944 – November 29, 2013


Sharon was born on October 14, 1944 to Haywood and Hilda Long.  She would end up being the oldest sister to Shirley born November 2, 1945 and Susan born February 20, 1955.  The girls would grow up in Kettering, OH with dad working as a civil servant out at Wright Field after marrying Hilda and separating from the Army Air Corp in 1945 which brought him here from Parsons, TN.  She met her husband Dick during their school days at Fairmont High School and they would end up getting married in April 1965.  Dick and Sharon would end up with 3 sons, Rick born on Nov 1, 1966, Dave on October 9, 1968 and Steve on June 28, 1972.  Sharon dabbled as a school teacher for awhile after high school, but she ultimately would decide to pursue a career in nursing and graduated from Sinclair Community College in 1972 with her RN degree.  She went to work at Kettering Medical Center in 1975 where she worked as a floor nurse, later transitioned from the floor to an offsite location where she helped the hospital convert to computers, back to the hospital where she worked with pregnant mothers and finally started and led the Precious Beginnings Home Care program where nurses would check up on the mothers and babies after leaving the hospital.  She would go back to school while working at Kettering and graduated from the University of Dayton with a BS degree in Education in 1984.  Over the years she would put in over 30 years of service at Kettering Medical Center.  

She would be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in March 1992 at the age of 47 prior to Rick and Cindy's wedding on March 21.  In large part due to a good team of doctors and her insistence that she wanted to dance at the wedding, she scheduled surgery before the wedding rather than waiting till after.  And dance at the wedding she did.  At the time of her diagnosis, the overall survival rate for ovarian cancer was less than 50% at five years and unfortunately has changed very little since then.  She would undergo 8 months of chemotherapy that would cause her to lose all her hair and made her violently sick at times but would come out on the other side with no signs of detectable cancer.

Fortunately, life would get back to some sense of normal after her initial diagnosis and treatments and on May 13, 1995, David would marry his wife Candace allowing her to dance at yet another wedding.  Shortly after, Sharon's first grandchild, Bradley would be born on June 12, 1995.  While Rick and Cindy never intended for the grandmothers to be in the delivery room for the birth, during the hectic activity they sat quietly as not to be noticed and witnessed the entire delivery.  Sharon's second grandson, Benjamin, would be born May 12, 1997 and we're pretty sure we did a double take to make sure nobody was in the room for his birth, but again we failed and she would witness her second grandson born.  David and Candace would end up adding two grand daughters to the family, Hanna born Dec 2, 1998 and Meghan born Aug 25, 2000.  Some where in here, the five year mark quietly came and went and we continued to keep our fingers crossed that we would never hear about ovarian cancer ever again.  Steve would end up pushing the odds in favor of the boys by adding another grandson, Wyatt, born on February 21, 2005.  Steve would marry his wife Bambi in June of 2013 and Bambi would bring her daughter Haley to the grandkid mix making it an even 3 boys to 3 girls.  The grandchildren that we had dreaded Sharon might never see were born and not only seen but grew up with her with many birthdays, family vacations, school events and sporting events with her in attendance.  She would also witness the marriages of all her children and watch them mature into adulthood.

Sharon would suffer a recurrence of her cancer in 2001 and would once again start down the dreaded path of chemotherapy and radiation.  While some remissions would last awhile, she would ultimately fight this disease with multiple courses of therapy and surgeries for her remaining time with us.  Her trust in her long time oncologist, Dr. Lavelle, was unquestionable.  When one drug didn't work her question was always “what's plan B” to which one time Dr. Lavelle responded “I think we're past plan B and probably on plan N right now” and as long we hadn't reached plan Z she was fine and as she liked to say “This too shall pass”.  We're thankful that she found a compassionate and caring person in Dr. Lavelle as it made her decisions and journey so much easier.  In her true nature, she only gave this disease the minimum time required, never researched or wanted to know the statistics and continued working, traveling and enjoying life and would eventually retire from work in 2006.  

During this time she would find time to travel with friends to places like Peru, Alaska, China, Italy, Mexico, the Caribbean and took numerous cruises over the years.  Sharon even took a trip to Hawaii in October of 2013 in spite of increasing pain as these were goals to her and really what living was all about.

Not to be missed was always an annual vacation with the family and grandchildren to Gatlinburg, TN, with time spent in the Smokey's, Norris TN for play time on the lake, Ft. Walton Beach, FL for time spent on the ocean and visiting with her sister and her family.

Sharon would be submitted for the American Cancer Society “Spirit of Hope” Courage Award in 1995 after her initial diagnosis by her supervisor, Kae Quinlan, at Kettering Medical Center.  Kae asked one of Sharon's co-workers to describe her which came the following response:

“Do you mean beside that she is a ray of sunshine, always positive at a real depth, and that I admire her and that she is kind, generous, and demonstrates true faith ? Besides all that ?

Kae would sum up the nomination with the following words:
“I nominate Sharon because she exemplifies the light of a true human spirit that cannot be dimmed by disease because the light is too strong.  Please consider her for the “Spirit of Hope”  courage award for 1995.”

A long time friend of Sharon's, Joy Rose's grand daughter, Cassie, would write the following paper titled “My Hero” for a creative writing class:

“My hero is Sharon Sorg.  She is my hero because she has battled cancer throughout her life five different times and is now in the midst of her sixth.  Mrs. Sorg has had treatments that have failed, pain we can't even imagine, and people who have given up on her.  But she has also had things that many of us long for or only get a glimpse of, miracles, love and most of all hope.”

“Mrs. Sorg is my hero because I look up to her.  I bet most of us would if we knew her.  I always feel so proud when I'm around her because I know that I'm standing next to a hero, I'm seeing someone who never gave up and stood tall through the worst.  Mrs. Sorg has always been a fighter when the rest of us sat and begged for a miracle to happen.  Mrs. Sorg is a warrior.”

“Mrs. Sorg is my hero because she has never given up hope.  She has always made the best in things.  And when there was nothing positive about the situation she would make one.  When you were four years old and would say “I want to be just like them when I grow up.” That's how I feel now; I want to be like Mrs. Sorg, fun, pretty, unique and most of all, my hero.”

To many of you Sharon was a friend, to others a sister, a sister-in-law, a cousin, an aunt, a wife to Dick but to Rick, Dave and Steve, she was a mom and we couldn't have asked for a better one.  Regardless of your relationship with her, I know we all can agree that she was a positive and inspirational person that taught us how to see the up side of things in everything she did and as she took on this struggle, she showed us what it really meant to be a fighter.  While it goes without saying that this is a most difficult time for all of us, Sharon would be disappointed if we dwell too long and would be most proud if we all carry a little of her light forward in our everyday lives as a tribute to her one of a kind spirit.

My prayers go out to the family. Sharon,Shirley,and Susan and I were friends from the first day the Long family move in two houses from my family. She was a very good friend. Always nice to everyone and she seemed to become a better person as the years went on. She will be missed by all. May God bless the family.

I only worked with Sharon a few years before her retirement but what a blessing those few years were. My grandmother fought ovarian cancer for 10 years before it finally took her in 2006. Sharon was always wanting updates on her and comforting me with her words and friendship. What a kind heart, what a brave spirit, what an amazing woman. I am so blessed to have known her.

Sharon was a beautiful person inside and out!  We will never forget the countless hours she spent at the ball fields for her grandsons.  She had a wonderful sense of humor and added so much to all our lives.  She is a true testament of strength and encouragement for those battling this horrible illness. Sharon was truly an amazing women who always put others first.  I have know Sharon, Shirley & Susan from Oak Park where we grew-up.  We played together, laughed together, & cried together. My deepest condolences to Sharon's family.  I worked with Sharon at KMC from 90-97.  She always had a smile! When I first met her she had trouble remembering my name for some reason and decided I looked like a "Kim".  So from that day forward she would call me Kim or whatever other name she could think of.  It was a running joke with us and we laughed about it every day we worked together.  She was a special soul and I can't wait to see her again. Rest well my friend.  You always made my day.

Dear Dick; I believe Sharon is one of the bravest and dearest women I have ever met. I love to share with others how she used humor to battle cancer. Sharon told me about her chemo wigs; she said she would decide which color to wear depending on her mood. What an inspiration she is to all of us.
