Candy was born in Vicksburg, MS and went to Vicksburg High School. She graduated from Delta State University with an Education degree. She later taught at both Warren Central and Vicksburg High Schools. She, Charles, and Wyatt had the opportunity to enjoy many great trips and adventures. Early in their marriage, Candy and Charles traveled to places like Mexico, Canada, the Bahamas, and San Francisco. When Wyatt was born there were more trips to places like Orlando and San Diego, and attending hundreds of baseball games across the Southeast to watch Wyatt play. Their favorite place to travel, though, was to the North Carolina mountains where they enjoyed camping (Candy sort of), rafting, river floating, and fishing. That love of the mountains was passed to Wyatt who has committed to play baseball at Brevard College.
The family also enjoyed going to MSU football games where they have been season ticket holders for many years. Candy and Charles were on national TV in the 90s at an MSU/Alabama game with Charles ringing his cowbell and Candy covering her ears. There are also purportedly pictures from 2000 where Charles put Wyatt on his shoulders and helped storm the field, much to Candy’s dismay, after MSU beat Florida.
Candy, Charles, and Wyatt have lived in 7 different houses in 6 different cities making a lot of new friends along the way. In their first years they enjoyed many Sunday school outings in Vicksburg with friends at Bowmar Baptist. The 11 years on the Coast were very special. Among the memories was being in the Gautier Mardi Gras Parade, enjoying a dinner cruise in the Gulf and enjoying many restaurants. Her favorites included Copelands, The Dock, and Aunt Jenny’s. They also had the “memorable” experience of building a house on the Coast. In North Alabama, Candy always did everything she could to support Wyatt in school and baseball, and was the team mom for his teams until he stopped played league ball.
Candy enjoyed cooking and baking and was absolutely the best in the world. Her number 1 dish was a unique recipe for chicken biscuits, and her spaghetti sauce was raved over by everyone. Tacos were a favorite of Wyatt. Candy had a very unique recipe for chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies, and Charles’s favorite cake was a strawberry cake. Her Thanksgiving dinners were unparalleled. She also invented a recipe for BBQ sauce that combined the best of the 2 types of sauces in NC (vinegar based and sugar based).
While the end of her life was challenged with failing health, the HTICU medical staff at UAB was nothing short of being angels on earth. Candy was extremely courageous and defied odds many times. Candy was a Christian and a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Madison, AL. She was baptized in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. She is currently picking out a log cabin with a double oven overlooking a lake in Heaven.
Instead of flowers, the family has requested contributions be made to the MSU Foundation or the Delta State Foundation.
