

Charles Gordon Jones passed away on Sunday, July 30th, at Decatur Morgan Hospital. He was born in Savannah, Ga on September 27, 1927. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 3rd, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Reverend Aaron Kretzschmar officiating. The service is at 3:00 p.m. with visitation at 2:00 p.m.
Gordon was educated in Savannah schools and Emory at Oxford Academy. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Emory University in Atlanta, and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.
He was a banker all of his career beginning with C&S National Bank in Savannah, Ga, Central Bank in Birmingham, Henderson Bank in Huntsville, and First National Bank of Decatur (AmSouth) as its President.
Gordon was a lifelong friend of small businesses, and was able to help many small businesses through his activities as a banker.
During his career he was active in civil affairs, serving as President of Decatur Chamber of Commerce, President and past Chairman of United Way, and also of D.A.R.E. of Decatur. He also presided over Decatur Rotary Club and Decatur Country Club. He was a registered Scouter for 47 years, and a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Gordon served for 8 years as the first Chairman of Calhoun Community College Foundation. He also served on the Birmingham Branch of the Federal Reserve, and the Board of Directors of AmSouth Bank Corporation.
Gordon was a loving dad and was always there for his children. He loved being with friends as they golfed, hunted, or traveled. He also loved playing his harmonica. He was “Daddy” to his children, “Papa” to his grandchildren, and “Uncle Corky” to his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Jones, two sisters, and one brother.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Jones, of 67 years; daughters, Katherine Jones Patterson and Jennifer Jones Day (Mike); and son Charles Gordon Jones Jr; grandchildren, Justin C. Holt, Morgan M. Holt; two step-grandchildren, Jeff Beasley and Jared Beasley; and many nieces and nephews.
Gordon was a long time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials be made to St. Paul’s Building Fund, 1700 Carridale St. SW, Decatur, AL 35601, or your favorite charity.
