
Herbert H. Parker, 87, of Decatur, passed away on November 27, 2011. He was born in Morgan County in 1924 and was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Sarah Parker; brother, Charles H., and twin brothers, Ralph and Ralphael. He is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Michael (Josie) Parker of Sierra Vista, AZ; Pat (Don) Norton of Tuscaloosa; David (Lynn) Parker of Charlotte, NC; Carol (Rick) Dubbs of Decatur; grandchildren Jessica (Josh) Underwood, Meghan Parker, Laura (Dave) Maschue, Sarah (Ricky) McKillop, Abby Parker; great grandchildren, Warren and Parker McKillop and Drew Maschue; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In 1943, Mr. Parker enlisted in the US Navy where he served until 1945 as well as serving in the Merchant Marines from 1947-1949. From 1950-1951, he was stationed in Korea with the US Army National Guard. He began working in Data Processing at Redstone Arsenal in 1952, serving as the Deputy Chief of the Data Processing Branch and later, as Chief of the Systems and Programming Division. Although he retired from RSA in 1974, he continued to work as a tax preparer, grocery store owner, real estate agent and broker, and independent contractor. His last jobs were Manpower Project Director with the North Alabama Regional Council of Governments and Business Manager of the Center for Developmentally Disabled of North Central Alabama. After a brief retirement in Destin, FL, Herb and Betty returned to Decatur in 1996, where they have lived since then. Herb loved his family, traveling, and visiting with friends, old and new.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on December 10 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Visitation will take place one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or Hospice of the Valley.
