Iley Sylvester Varnell, Jr., 90, of Decatur, passed away February 12, 2015 at Decatur Morgan Main Hospital. Funeral Services will be Monday, February 16, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend David Kelley officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service. Entombment will be in Roselawn Mausoleum.
Mr. Varnell was born August 4, 1924 in Smackover, Arkansas to Iley Sylvester and Susie Varnell. He retired after 29 years working at Monsanto as a production foreman. He was a member of 16th Avenue Baptist Church since 1965. He was an adult Sunday school teacher for the men’s class. He was in the Marine’s during World War II and was a lifetime member of the American Legion.
Mr. Varnell was preceded in death by his parents and brothers: James & Floyd Varnell.
Mr. Varnell is survived by his wife of 60 years: Shirley Varnell, son: Dennis Varnell, daughter: Sandra Carter, grandchildren: Jay, Michael and Stephen Strahan and 6 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be 16th Avenue Baptist Church Deacons.
