

John William Brandon, 88, of Decatur, passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2026. His visitation will be on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Roselawn Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service with Rev. Tripp Brogdon officiating at 3:00 PM in the chapel of the funeral home.
John is survived by his daughters, Mary Brandon Brown (Brian) and Sara Brandon Watkins (Alan); son, Greg Hendricks (David Kirkpatrick); grandchildren, Preston Brown (L.B.), Sam Watkins, Mallie Watkins, and Baylor Brown; great grandchildren, J.P. Brown, Carter Brown and August Tainatongo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mallie Brandon, sister, Prudence Ursich, and wife, Betty Vaughan.
John grew up in Greenwood, AL and graduated from Bessemer High School. He moved to Decatur in the early 1960’s and married the love of his life, Dr. Betty Vaughan, in 1965. He was a beloved teacher and taught at Brookhaven Middle School, then Somerville Road Elementary School for 11 years. He finished his career before retiring as the principal of Brookhaven Middle School. John loved Alabama football and attending games with his family. He was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. He adored nature and spending time outside. His pride and joy were his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
