At 10 years old, he bought a lawn mower (on credit) from a neighbor and began cutting grass to make some money. Much of which I suspect he gave to his mother to help her.
As he got older, he would work during the summer school vacation and save his money to buy some new clothes for the coming school year.
He played high school football (Hazelwood High - Town Creek) and he was quite popular.
He enrolled at Florence State College but only had money for the first half. So when he ran out of tuition money, he and a cousin decided to join the military.
They hitchhiked to Nashville and joined the military. Larry joined the Air Force and his friend joined the Navy, They went their separate ways to basic training.
Larry's Mom moved to Texas to be with him through basic training. However, when he was assigned to Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, VA, she would not go. (So, I always told him he must have married me so he would not be alone in Hampton, VA.)
Life in Hampton was wonderful. Larry had rented our first house in a nearby small community of Poquoson, VA. So, he came home on a 3-day pass and we got married on July 5th, 1963. Our neighbors were all elderly and they just took us "under their wings" as if we were their children.
We have been so very blessed throughout the years with our wonderful family: Two sons, Paul (wife Wanda) and David, three grandsons, Derrick (wife Desiree), Andrew, and Joshua, and our first great-grandchild, Delanie (who is the first girl in our direct lineage.)
Larry was an avid reader (his favorite books were The Wind in the Willows). He wrote beautiful poetry (mostly for me). He was very kind-hearted and giving to others, but he never talked about it. He was an animal lover (and left me with 2 dogs and 3 cats - all rescues).
Larry was a good husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather,
He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
WE WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER!!
