

Samuel “Sam” Robert Gewin passed away at home surrounded by family on July 19, 2016. He was born on Sept. 13,1940, in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, to Samuel Evan and Marie Honeck (Massicot) Gewin. Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline L. Lindsey in 2011. He later married Sandra Ayers Whitaker. Sam was born in Pennsylvania, he also lived in New York, West Virginia, Missouri, and Illinois, before he attended the University of Alabama where he graduated with a degree in chemistry. He later earned his MBA from Athens College. After two years in the army, Sam served in the reserves for six years. He worked as a process engineer at 3M for 34 years. He was an active member of Central Baptist Church of Decatur. Sam was known for his subtle sense of humor and his love of his church, country, automobiles, travel and Alabama football. Sam’s friends and family will remember his generosity and compassion and his greatest wish is to see his loved ones in heaven. Sam is survived by his wife, Sandra Gewin; daughters, Janet Elizabeth (Brian) Riley and Joan Isabelle Drew, both of Florence; two grandchildren, Jessica Danielle Goodwin of Danville and Samuel Isaac Gewin of Birmingham; one great-granddaughter, Korbie Callahan of Danville; one brother, John Borden (Jean) Gewin of Princeton, Illinois; three stepchildren, Daniel Riley Cockrell of Decatur, Sabrina Lee Cockrell of Decatur, and Michael Shane (Christy) Cockrell of Navarre Beach, Florida; five stepgrandchildren, Riley and Taylor, Blake (Crystal) Cockrell, Zac Cockrell (bass player of Alabama Shakes) and Talon Cockrell; one nephew, John Russell (Jenny) Gewin; one niece Tonya Marguerite Gewin; two great-nieces and three great-nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be Friday, July 22, 2016 at 3 p.m. at Central Baptist Church in Decatur. A time of visitation with the family will be from 1 to 3 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in East Lawrence Memorial Gardens in Moulton. Roselawn Funeral Home has the honor of serving the family.
In lieu of flowers, Sam wanted memorials directed to Central Baptist Church for the Life House Food Pantry, 2801 Highway 31 S, Decatur, AL 35603 or Hospice Family Care, 3304 Westmill Drive, Huntsville, AL 35805.
