Troy Eugene Corbin, Sr. was my Uncle Gene.  He was the youngest of eight children, my Mom's "little brother".  He always held a very special place in her heart.  Perhaps it was because he was the baby of the family.  I think she loved him so much, because he was so easy to love.  

One of my fondest memories of Uncle Gene was the way we used to greet each other.  I can't remember when we started doing this, but I know I was very young.  Every time we would see each other Uncle Gene would say " Hi 'ya Haaaaarve", with a slow wave as he drew out the word Harve.  And then, I would repeat it back to him the same way.  It was so silly.  I'm sure we were copying something we'd seen on TV, but it was our thing, just between the two of us.  And then we'd hug.  

The last time I saw Uncle Gene was at his sister Anna's funeral, my "Auntie Ann".  I hadn't seen him for several years, but as soon as he saw me ...."Hi 'ya Haaaaarve", the wave and all!  We had such a nice visit that day and that's when he told me he had been diagnosed with cancer.  Cancer.....please, God no!  Not another member of this family!  I was absolutely heartsick, and so scared for him.  "Not my Uncle Gene, too" I thought.

But the more we talked, the calmer I felt.  I began to realize, he wasn't afraid.  His blue eyes were still twinkling and there was that infectious smile of his.  "He's gonna be OK", I thought.  Gene didn't loose his battle to cancer.  He faced it head on.  He continued to live his life and be there for his children, his grandchildren and my Aunt Julie.  And always, always with that smile.

And now, my dear, sweet Uncle Gene is gone.  My mother's little brother.  I take comfort in knowing they are together again. I believe it's hard for them to let go, to leave us all behind.  Because they love us so much.  And even though they're so sick and we've been taking care of them, they still feel like they need to take care of us.  And they have.  By leaving us behind, they make it easier for us to follow. 

I love you Uncle Gene.  Give Mom a kiss for me.

I am thinking about you today and missing you. I hope that you get to meet Elizabeth Taylor in Heaven! Love you!

Papaw, I love you so very much. You were so brave and so strong and there never seemed to be an obstacle you couldnt over come. you've taught me so much in my life and i only wish you could have seen us grow up and see what we can and will accomplish. you are and always will be the greatest grandfather i could or anyone could ever ask for<3

Father, you proved time and time again how good of a man you were by your selflessness and compassion towards those around you. I will never forget the times you recruited me to fix up the house or when you took me to your job so I could help you work.

The times we sat and listened to each others' music, our video game talks and the movies we watched together. They will forever be with me, never to fade.

I Love you very much Dad. We will one day be reunited.

My Grandfather was an incredibly strong person, he proved that every day of his life. I've told friends about him, and how he made it seem so easy to care for, and provide a wonderful life for such a large family traveling state to state. 

Because of him, I am proud to carry the Corbin name, and hope that one day I can be admired and respected in my life as much as he was.

Papaw,you are and will be the greatest grandfather in the world.You were always there for your family.I remember when you let us stay there until we could find a place of our own,and you put up with our craziness.
Me,Brad and Jacyn are so very grateful to have a person like you in our life.You have taught us so many things in life,and I'm very thankful for that.

Words alone can not express how much I loved my dad. His strength and courage is something I will always admire. 

Dad never asked for anything and always put his childrens needs before his own. Even during the times he did not feel well, he would still make time for us. Be it questions about car problems or about what we were doing in our daily lives. 

I wish I had said it more often but he was and always will be the best dad anyone could ask for. I will never forget the things he taught us or the many locations we visited. 

For that, I am eternally grateful. I'm going to miss you, but I'll never forget you.

 I love and admire my Dad for so many reasons. He was a wonderful husband to our Mom for 45 years and the best father to his five children that anyone could wish for. He had a great sense of humor, he was artistic and he was never afraid of new challenges. He worked so hard for his family and was still working when many others would have been retired. He was quietly selfless, always willing to help any of us if we asked it of him without hesitation. He would drive through the night across hundreds of miles to visit family in our home state of West Virginia. If I ever had a problem or needed advice, he was there for me. Even recently when I was sick, my Dad made me breakfast and brought it to me, even though he himself was weak and tired. He also had an incredible memory and sharp mind all of his life. But most of all, I admire his incredible love and devotion to his family. He did so many things for us and never asked for anything in return. I know in recent years Dad, you endured so much to keep strong for your family.

 I have so many wonderful memories of all the vacations Dad would make for us and the exciting and new cities we were able to see because of his jobs. He loved getting us special family gifts at Christmas. He loved taking us to the drive-in as kids or to the park or just take a family trip on the spur of the moment. I'll never forget him teaching me how to fly a kite when I was little or home movie nights when he would get the film projector out, pull up the movie screen and share his home movies with us. All of these happy times and more will always be with me to look back on with such joy. Even recently Dad was making DVD slide shows of family memories for us. I am so thankful we will always have them to enjoy Dad, as well as listening to the music you created.

 The loss of my wonderful Dad has left a terrible hole in my life and a great emptiness. You fought so hard and endured so much for us. Your incredible strength, love and devotion to Mom and to us is a gift that I will always cherish. I know that you and Mom loved each other so much. You were meant for each other. That love never faltered and you were able to face so many hardships together because of the strength of your love. 

 Thank you for everything Dad. You have touched so many people's lives. I will strive to live my life by your example.  I love you so much with all my heart Dad and I know that you love us too.  
We miss you so very much, but I know someday we will all be together again. I believe what Mom said is true; you will always be with her, because you will be in her heart forever.

I am so very sorry.I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Corbin but, I can surely tell he was VERY LOVED. The memorial was lovely. I think he would have approved. You don't know me but my heart goes out to you. Deah told me about your loss and I can only imagine the pain. I can also only hope there are happy memories to out shine the shadows.
A friend of mine recently lost their grandfather, who was more like a father. He inherited his grandfathers bible, which was in his grandpa's possession since 1933. In it there was a torn out prayer from some magazine that spoke to him so much that he kept it for years. I hope it gives you comfort as it has given my friend in the past few months. 
"Teach me, O Lord, to be sweet and gentle in all the events of life; in disappointments, in the thoughtlessness of others, in the insincerity of those I trusted, in the unfaithfulness of those on whom I relied.
...Teach me to profit by the suffering that comes across my path.
May no one be less good for having come within my influence; no one less pure, less true, less kind, less noble."

One of my earliest memories in life was helping to pull my dad's boots off when he came home from work. I was so young that it was a game to me, and it seemed to make him smile so I was always happy to do it. I remember my mom saying "Daddy works hard all day and he's really tired. He needs your help to pull them off." I'll never forget it because it taught me all I ever needed to know about my father: That he worked hard for his family.

Every few years we would move. Sometimes it was just a different city. Sometimes it was a different time zone. Always it was a different adventure. Now and then we could afford to hire a moving van. Often we made due with a U-Haul.  But he always managed to make it work, because he worked hard for his family.

It's tough to make a good life for yourself. It's even tougher when you're making a good life for a wife and five kids. Troy, my father, was a specially trained nuclear quality control inspector. Wherever there was a new plant being built, he was there. If there were repairs to be made to an existing site, even if it was still in use, he was there. My father never shied away from dangerous work, even if there was a risk of radiation poisoning. Why? Because he worked hard for his family.

Sometimes emergencies would come up, and we would have to visit our extended family in West Virginia. My Dad would drive straight through, sometimes for 14 hours or more. I would watch in awe as he fought off sleep deprivation while navigating switchbacks in the Monongahela National Forest. but I never worried that he would fall asleep at the wheel, because I knew... he worked hard for his family.

One time I blew the head gasket on my station wagon and it cracked the engine. My father knew I didn't have the money to have it professionally repaired, and I certainly couldn't afford to buy a new one. So every day, after getting home from a full day of work, he would grab some dinner, and then I'd follow him into the garage as he helped me repair my car. I knew he was tired and would rather be watching TV, but he did it because he worked hard for his family.

My father was the anchor that kept our family from going adrift, and he will be sorely missed. But I understand, as I believe he did, that your family is your legacy. The lessons and values that he passed on to his children... we will pass on to ours. And in that way, though he may be gone from us now, his essence will live on.

I'm proud to have your name Dad. And though I don't have any children of my own yet, I promise you, I will work hard for my family too.
