Jeanne Legerme “Tante Jeanne” was born February 21, 1930 in Sault-du-Baril, a commune of Anse-à-Veau, Haiti to parents Casimir Legerme and Félicité Vilmenay-Legerme. She passed away at the Good Samaritain Hospital in Long Island on February 9, 2018. She was 87.
Tante Jeanne was raised in Sault du Baril, Haiti. Back then, educating girls was not a priority. She tried the best she could when attending schools. Despite all she deeply believed in education.
When she moved to Port-au-Prince in 1954, where the opportunities were brighter, she opened her mind and also her heart to her family members as she started working. Surrounded by educated people while working as a housekeeper at the Brazilian Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, she listened and learned. She became passionate about education. She read all kind of informative magazines and newspapers and brought them home to share with nephews and nieces. Her favorite magazine was “Selection Reader’s Digest”. Some of her relatives are grateful today for her financial support to their education.
Tante Jeanne, a self-educated and a lifelong learner, fell in love and got engaged with a school teacher and lawyer. Unfortunately, their plan didn’t materialize as dreamed.
She was loved by many and was a pillar for her family. Although she didn’t have any children, she has made a positive impact on the lives of many of her relatives, devoting all her life for her nephews and nieces she considered as her own children. Very loving and caring aunt and sister, loyal and dependable friend, generous and compassionate. She had a generous heart and an open home. She truly believed in helping others.
Tante Jeanne leaves to mourn: her sister, Melia Legerme; her cousins, Philippe Legerme and his wife, Chantal, Fernande Legerme, Gerard Metellus and his wife, Gepsie, Dominique Hyppolite and his wife, Marie Carmen, Anite Legerme; her nephews and nieces, Carole Legerme Labordes, Kettelye Legerme, Jean Legerme, Georges Legerme and his wife Nadine, Rose Marie Legerme, Serge Legerme and his wife, Chantal, Yvette Sylvain, Marie Yvrose Legerme, Bertony Legerme, Jean Claude Legerme, Ste Rose Legerme and her husband Guyteau Modestil, Roinès Legerme and his wife, Evelyne, Yvrose Orelien and her husband Jean Marc Jeannot, Yardelie Legerme and her husband Randolph Delva, Micheline Legerme, Yves Jean Legerme, Immacula Legerme, Gary Legerme, Sony Legerme, Mirmonde Legerme, Javeline Torchon, Maxo Torchon, Yolaine Torchon, Preçois Torchon, Marie Carmel Torchon, Yvette Torchon and countless relatives and friends.
