Margery Kahl Munger passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025, surrounded by her three loving daughters. She was just five months shy of her 100th birthday. Born in Wallingford, CT on June 8, 1925, she was the daughter of Louis and Elsie (Hess) Kahl. Her father was a tool-and-die maker at International Silver and her mother was a homemaker. After graduating from Lyman Hall High School, she attended Virginia Intermont College and then radio school in Boston. As a traffic coordinator, she spent happy years at WNHC in New Haven and KRLD in Dallas, TX.
In 1948, she married Stephen I Munger IV, whom she had met while he was a student at the Choate School. They were married for 55 years before he passed away in 2004. After marriage, they lived in Dallas, TX and Washington, DC before moving overseas and spending eight years in Genoa and Rome, Italy in connection with Stephen’s job.
Upon returning to the Washington area, Midge (as she was affectionately known) and Stephen moved to their home in Bethesda, MD. She soon became a very active member of St. David’s Church on Macomb St. in Washington. A lifelong musician (piano), she joined the choir and then took on the task of learning to play the organ. After several years of diligent study, she became the Assistant Organist and Junior Choir Director at St. David's. She considered herself incredibly lucky, she said, as every day she could go to the church and make glorious music.
At home, she cherished time spent in her beautiful garden where she enjoyed reading and being surrounded by nature. Music and travel were two of her passions, happily fulfilled with a great deal of travel with Stephen later in life. They particularly loved traveling to London and Scotland.
Her other passion was collecting teapots. Traveling offered a wonderful opportunity for her to continually expand her remarkable collection, which numbered 130 at its peak.
After 52 years in her beautiful family home, Midge moved to New York to be closer to her daughters.
She was a kind and loving person, always the first to put others above herself. She is survived by her three daughters - Virginia Munger Kahn (Michael), Diana Munger Hechler, and Janet Munger Davis (Mark), her four loving grandchildren – Jeffrey Hechler, Peter Hechler, Lindsay Davis and Andrew Davis, two great-grandchildren, her brother-in-law Dexter Munger (Sandy), sister-in-law Ada Kahl. Midge's brother Donald passed away at the age of 86 in June 2016. She is also survived by five nieces and nephews. She will be sorely missed by all.
A Memorial Service and a Celebration of our Mom, Margery Munger’s, long and happy life will be held on Sat., June 21st at 11:30 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 4 Fountain Square, Larchmont, NY 10538. A reception will follow. We’ll have more details the closer we get to the event.
