

James Abernethy of Deerfield Beach FL (formerly of Freehold Township NJ) passed away peacefully, in his sleep in Florida on May 25th 2017. He was born and raised in New York City, Manhattan, Bronx and eventually Staten Island. Jim enlisted in to the New York Guard before he was of age and upon discovery, he was honorably discharged. He then entered the Air Force spending two years in Paris. Upon, his return Jim started a family with his beloved Beatrice in Staten Island before moving to beautiful, rural Freehold Township in New Jersey.
Jim became a decorated New York City Fireman spending much of his career with Ladder 77 and then Engine 151 in Staten Island. He was very proud of his brave, talented men and he was honored to serve with them. Jim was instrumental in helping the fledging East Freehold Fire Company get the proper training and desperately needed equipment. He was a true Patriot! In retirement he loved to garden, play cards, watch sports, walk the beach and to tell his stories.
Jim is predeceased by his beloved wife Beatrice and his parents Margaret (McAlevy) and James Abernethy. Jim is survived by his son James Abernethy, Palm Beach, FL, a daughter and son in-law Margaret and Mehryar Shafai, Freehold Twp. NJ, his son and daughter in-law Kevin and Katherine Abernethy, Millstone NJ, his son and daughter in-law Kerry and Teresa Abernethy, Cape Coral FL.
Jim is also survived by many very loving nieces and nephews - especially those in Florida that spent a considerable amount of time with and caring for him in the last few years. Mary Ann and Peter cannot be thanked enough for opening up their home and the care they gave him the last year of his life.
Jim is also survived by his ten very much loved grandchildren; Kelly (Abernethy) Fulginiti, Jessica (Shafai) Duffy, Michael, Matthew Shafai, William, Ryan Abernethy, Patrick, Brendan, Holly, Rebecca Abernethy, and great-grandchildren, Micah Abernethy, Abigail Duffy and soon to be baby Fulginiti.
