Albert “Al” Leonard Horges was born January 21, 1949 in Chicago, IL to parents Rubye Maxine Williams and Eddie Leonard Horges. He was raised and educated in the Chicago Public School system and graduated in June of 1968. He later completed his college associates degree. In March 1969, Al enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. While stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, AL, he met the love of his life, Lela Evonne “Von” Knight. They married in March of 1973 and later transferred to Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, SC. On March 12,1981, the couple was blessed with a beautiful baby girl, LaTonya Renee. She was a bright light in their lives. The family transferred to Tinker Air Force Base, OK where Al retired honorably as a Master Sergeant in March of 1989. He received numerous awards and decorations for national defense, meritorious, and outstanding service.
Al started his second career with the U.S. Postal Service in November of 1989. He enjoyed working with the people there. He retired for the last time on November 30, 2009 after serving the United States for 40 years!
Al loved being a husband and father. He cherished every minute with his family. Family and friends witnessed and shared in the abundance of their love. His pride in his daughter was evident. Even when she grew into an adult, married, and moved away, he remained supportive of her endeavors and spoke with her every day until her passing on September 24th, 2020.
He enjoyed fishing and playing golf. After retiring, he spent a lot of time “improving” his skills by watching these sports on TV while reclining in his favorite chair. He also loved to grill and he was a master; his food was finger lickin’ good.
After celebrating 51 years of marriage, Al lost his beloved wife Von on July 1st, 2024. He departed this world on February 23rd, 2025. He loved life, was loved by many, and will be missed.
Al is survived by his mother, Rubye Williams of Chicago, IL and son-in-law Travis Pentzer of Calexico, CA. Memories of him are also in the hearts of his relatives in Chicago and Montgomery. Friends across America will forever miss him. Rest In Peace Brother Al!
